Decades ago I had a 2627 and didn't know what I know now nor what I had then and basically ruined a perfectly good stainless watch turning into gold on steel because that's what Omega claimed it was.

Someone on eBay is selling NOS straps that came with these watches when new, so what the heck, I bought a KO 2627, and if I remember those letters right, that is gold on steel.

If you look at a vintage ad and the oldest examples of the 2627, you see a domed crown:

The watch I bought, however, has the slotted crown:

Now, Omega used the Seamaster picture with the dome crown much later than they did with the actual watches is my theory; I've seen way too many with the slotted crown to believe they're all wrong.

My question to you guys, do you have a sense of when the domed crown changed to slotted? The auction did not expose the movement nor serial of this watch, so I'll have to wait until I receive it, but a quick look through eBay suggests that the dome crown was used with the 2627 in 1951 and maybe 1952 with the slotted crown used thereafter.

The strap does not have a buckle, so I am going with the gold loop at this point. Not marked Omega, but close to the real thing according to the ads and the stainless version I still have kicking around somewhere.

I am pretty sure that yours should have the "bowler hat" crown and not the clover leaf crown on it now. Yours is the earlier version; the later ones haven't got the square cut-out for the date. Also, while I am not 100% sure, I don't think that any of these came with other crowns than the bowler type.

As I was web-searching around, I note that the slotted crown is listed for case 2627 by Otto Frei, which perhaps means that it is an approved replacement, and of course when servicing a waterproof watch, the crown is frequently replaced.

This is an example of the "Domed" crown.

Most old ads I've seen have bowler crowns for 2627s and the clover crown for 2767. I guess it could be possible that some of the later 2627s used the clover kind.

I've done some research and I'm hoping to have some of you help. My watch has a case number of 2627-7SC. Where I can do a search online for that exact case number, they all come with the slotted crown.

Any of you seeing correlations between later revisions and slotted crowns?

IMO, there are not necessarily any changes between the various iterations/revisions of the Omega references of that era, as opposed to what you see with Speedmasters. They are batch numbers. If you're looking to find out if the crown is correct, you're better off comparing serial numbers.

I'm willing to play. Serial on this movement is 13007895.

But you've actually reinforced my theory some. A "batch" would certainly have the same bill of materials throughout and there's no need to change batch number unless there's a change to the bill of materials.

I'd be very interested to know how to access this parts look-up..
Otto Frei is hard to use, or I just don't know how to use their site.
    Appreciate any info. Thanks, Tom
