Hello everyone, This is my first entry and I would like to ask a question. I came across this 2998-1.Wonder is this a watch to purchase? I guess the bezel is wrong? Please kindly advise me.
Hi, Could you post more pictures of the watch? More pictures the better, Members here will be able to tell you a lot about the watch but would like to see more pictures. If you can have the watch opened and take several pictures of the movement and inner case back that would help a lot.
More pics would help, but I can tell you now it is missing the Base 1000 bezel, which puts a sizable dent in value.
Thank you for the advise. Some extra pictures added. That's what I thought of the mssing Base 1000 bezel.
The dial is gorgeous, not sure if the lume is original though (the 12 o'clock marker looks very plum, never seen so much tritium applied to each dot surrounding the 12 o'clock marker?)
The bezel is wrong but amazing for later ref... (i need that bezel to complete my Triple chocolate speedy...)
The dial looks great but................ Reminds me of my 2998-6 because, unfortunately, it is a later 2998-3 thru 105.002-62 dial. Bezel is later as well ,not a base 1000. What is the movement number?
Not necessarily. I think it is a radium dial. Rather nice too. You could check for radium with a GC. Problem is it isn't correct for a 2998-1. Basically a correct dial and bezel would cost you, after searching for quite a while, as much as the watch, say $27k give or take. I'm assuming you want the same quality (high end) dial and bezel as you have now. From that you could deduct the cash raised from selling the later bezel and dial. Perhaps half of what you will spend. The biggest problem isn't the money. The parts are near impossible (especially in this condition) to find. The movement number appears to be correct for a 2998-1.
Thank you Gemini4 for the info. The dial is amazing but probably will keep looking for a correct 2998-1.
Unless you are experienced in sourcing vintage Speedmaster parts, that is probably the best decision. However, this watch even at $27k (which includes a 7077 bracelet with #6 end links, worth $3k -4k perhaps) would be appealing to some collectors. Not for a newbie I think.
The base 1000 bezel is the easier part. The dial is even harder. Impossible vs Unattainable. Take your pick.
