Well with your assistance I bought this c. 1966 stainless piepan Constellation on eBay, and it just arrived today. It's going to my watchmaker tomorrow morning, but in the meantime here are some photos I just snapped.

I think overall it looks great; my only question mark is the unusual inside caseback perlage, but a couple of you have assured me it's correct. Thoughts? Insults? Insider trading tips?

No, congrats.....great example, get it serviced, wear it, REPEAT:thumbsup:

One suggestion......use less harsh light when taking pix

Get a bracelet, get multiple straps, play with it and find what speaks to you- then wear the shit out of it.

Thanks for the suggestion: I got one of those cheap light boxes off Amazon and indeed the LED light is pretty harsh. I took a bunch of other pictures in natural light, but they weren’t as clear. I guess I need to look into some of those forum entries about photographing watches…

Yeah I’ve got an X, but these reflective little bastards are hard to shoot clearly. Anyway I think you’re right: all other things being equal, natural light wins.

Very cool, I knew nothing about this, thanks. Based on the caliber and serial number my watch, you seem to be correct. 100,000 is quite a lot of watches, so I imagine that many on this board also own one?

From the PDF linked in the blog post you provided:

"The third Milestone: From the 5th October, 1964 to February 10th 1966, a consecutive series of 100,000 27.90 RA calibre 551 and 561 movements was submitted to the Bureau Officiel and all achieved the coveted “especially Good results” appellation. Serial numbers for this series were from 24,410,000 to 24,509,999.

Collecting serial numbers within the range of any of the above milestones is akin to collecting horological history. These movements were made during what was regarded as the finest hours of Swiss watchmaking: a time probably never to be repeated, and a time when the dogma of modern profit-driven production methodology wasn’t even a spark in the consciousness of neo-capitalism."

Reminds me of Mercedes of the same era: over-engineered, built to a quality standard rather than a price point. A significant reason why I love vintage.

Agreed. Even the bulk of my nicer clothing is from the 50's-60's (nothing like a worsted or flannel shadow plaid 3-button with slim lapels to make a man look sharp). Same thing- even the OTR fabrics were sensational compared to the crap we get now.

You're preaching to the choir. Now I'm going to keep myself from waxing poetic about vintage guitars, vintage furniture, vintage art etc...
