I just bought this gorgeous Omega Ploprof named to a USMC Gunnery Sergeant who was a diver in the 3rd Recon Battalion in Vietnam. His name and rank are engraved on the back.

Congratulations sir, I wish you a lot of wearing fun with this. The PloProf is a magical beast.
The dial is the final iteration of the original tritium dials, D5 as per omegaploprof.com
The dial dates around -79 -80, not sure if Gibson was still roaming around Vietnam by then. If the watch had a dial swap it can be from early 70s as well ofcourse. If you ever come across one, switch out the bezel for a tritium one. The one that matches this dial period correct is the flat top 3 bezel, thin script.
Wear it in good health sir.

Thanks, what makes this specific dial (a D5 indeed) a 79-80 iteration. from what i understand the D5 was produced from 74 to around 78 or 79 when production ended of the ploprof. Are there references of dates of production out there?

Thanks, i have a 7.5 wrist.
The Ploprof is awesome. And frankly, as someone with a ~6-1/2" wrist, I pull off the modern one just fine. The short lug-to-lug makes it fit way better than you'd expect.
