I have always been baffled, up until recently, by the facet said to be on CB cased 105.012's. Mine dont have any, even though some are CB cases.

    Until now...

Here is a 105.012-66 case I just aquired. It has the best "Facet" I have seen, and finally I understand what everyone has refered to!

    Heres another "Lug Shot"

The red line shows this junction, and it is this that people are talking about. Clearly it is easily polished off.

Now I have to find a dial, and I have seen literally all types of applied logo professional dials in this reference, so I am quite unsure of what is correct.

Have to wait for my copy of that book, but in the meantime, anyone know what dial is correct?

Ok, here is one of mine - pretty much untouched. The original bracelet also came with the watch:

Here's a clue (only because I don't recall the details): something to do with the height and spacing of SWISS MADE, and (IIRC) the length of the indexes?

Hi Spacefruit - Mike's picture is correct, and 100% consistent with mine.

The T SWISS MADE T is spaced correctly. For 105.012-66 and subsequent, the T's should touch the 28 and 32-minute indices.

Yep, the T SWISS MADE T spacing on MSN's matches my 105.012-66 exactly. I'm incredibly biased but IMO even after removing the moon landing history from this, the shorter pushers and lug facets make this the most desirable pro model. It just give it an 'edge' over the normal asymmetrical case.

It is true the dial looks perfect. But do we know if other types were actually fitted? I have one with a "SWISS MADE" only. It's a 63, with a 2052xxxx serial.

To my knowledge, only the wide-spaced, 28/32 T SWISS MADE T dials were ever fitted to the 105.012-66 CB case references. The 105.012-66 CB case reference seemed to introduce the one-step/single-bevel caseback, along with the wider 28/32 T SWISS MADE T dials; as well as feature the vertical facets and shorter drive-in pushers that are unique ONLY to the 105.012-66 CB case.

Look carefully at the pushers found on both yours, and Mike's cases. . .they are roughly .9mm shorter than the pushers found on 105.012-65, 105.012-66 HF, and 145.012-67 and subsequent references.

    cheers,
    Mark

Seems odd the dials would be unique to the -66 CB cases. As I understand it, Speedmasters were assembled from the parts bin. How did specific dials end up on specific cases?

From experience and from the moonwatch book there is a lot of order in these early speedmasters - specific movement serial ranges associated with specific cases, dials, hands, crowns, bezels and pushers.

And here's one on the 'bay. -66 CB case. See the facets? Me neither. Polished away! Or down...there's a faint hint of what once was glorious. It will sell at that price anyway. The bezel alone is worth $2,000 ;) (kidding, though I think it will not last).

What makes it worse is that the seller states the case was original until recently. He/she has just had it polished!
