Actually I have no idea. My wife used to be a wedding photographer so the camera and flash kit were part of her gear. About 5-6 years ago I was all over this stuff but now I simply shoot with what I have.

Do you want to buy one or already have one? It's among the best, if not the best, cameras these day, but if you don't have it yet, it's overkill for you.

I don't have one yet, but was pondering the thought. I've always liked Nikons, but I've never had a nice DSLR, so I was considering it. What are your thoughts on the other mid range Nikons?

I have Nikons and like them. Depends on your purpose, they could be heavy and cumbersome for you though. If you've never had a serious camera before, I would recommend either a Panasonic LX100 or a Sony RX100-III for most purposes (my preference is the Panasonic).

I would look at a D90 or D5200. Love my D80 as most my shots are converted to 1024 for online viewing.

Hell, you could get a used D80 for a couple hundred and invest the rest in good glass.

Forgot to add that both of them are serious cameras with serious quality, just in different form factor, and even more expensive than some Nikon/Canon DSLRs.

My goto lens for my D80 is a Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG.

Do you think all the megapixels on the new cameras with 24 megapixels makes a huge difference or would you just rather have a 10 megapixel camera and a nice lens?

Personally I doubt I would ever use the higher resolution. My wife shot weddings for 3 years with the D80. Her lens is the Nikon 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 G ED-IF AF-S VR DX which is a great all around lens but pricey.

Yeah, I think all the megapixels is for the professional who can use all that horsepower.

We really needed the DSLR's for her wedding business and I was chuffed at the proposition of having a body I could change the lens on but in the end I never shoot with anything other than the Sigma and I don't think the VR has ever been off my wife's camera since she purchased it. I do like shooting in a constant f stop without worrying about zooming in too close. Not sure if the point and shoots do that. I always shoot in manual which is another reason why I like a DSLR but likely the point and shoots do that also.

They do make a difference because they are 24 "new" megapixels as compared to 10 year old 10MP. But since you'll most likely only display your pictures on a screen, even the new 4K displays need just 8MP or fewer. Just check out the camera store and try to see which one you're most comfortable with on your hands and with your pocket, you'll be good to go. Otherwise for a serious camera, the 2 I mentioned above will be most appropriate.

Yea, I'll read some reviews on the ones and then go take a look at the local camera shop
