Good morning,

Where do you put the brand?

I always liked the Reverso, it didn`t work for me in person - I just didn`t like it as a size and shape on my wirst ,however my wife is happy with her quartz one and now I am browsing the more affordable Master controls from mid `00s with the annual calendar and 37mm case.

Where do you put the JLC brand based on execution, quality and finish amongst the rest?

I don’t own a JLC watch though my wife owns a duo face Reverso. The dials are absolutely beautiful, and beautifully finished.

I recently picked up this JLC Master Hometime. I wanted a dress watch and this fit the bill.

Horologically… Somewhere above Rolex/Omega and somewhere below Patek/Lange.

Their sportier watches don’t do anything for me, but as a maker of luxury dress watches, they’re the best you can do (imo) for under 15k US. Gorgeous, clean designs, brilliant integration of complications on the dial, and superb movement finishing. (There’s a reason other brands like Patek would have JLC make movements for them.)

They don’t get hyped like other brands—definitely one for those who know what they’re talking about, not those led around by social media.

To your original question, I am a huge fan of the master control series. Classic look, great size, great movement and beautifully finished. And they can be attractively priced as well. Good luck if you get one. Enjoy.

I am a big fan of 90s-00s era JLCs, eg the first Master Control line that you and @blufinz52 posted, so much bang for buck. I would second the general notion that they are "above" Rolex/Omega/etc. but below the big 4. Hard to argue with 1000 hours of testing cased up against shock, magnetism, water, temperature, etc. and rated to ~+6/-1 sec/day.

+1. This, exactly. I’m a huge Omega fan, but my JLC is the best watch I own.

I wanted something different for a diver. Not something you see on others. Something well made. Something beautiful to behold both in terms of color and finishing. The chameleon dial is brilliant blue in sunlight and almost black indoors. It is the most comfortable bracelet I have worn.

Had a chance to fondle and play with the new JLC Reverso retrograde chronograph today, super fine with a very attractive grey-blue sunray dial, time on both sides. Right at $25,000, not cheap but not out of range compared to similar products from other houses.

I feel they are still underrated. They have excellent fit and finish overall and in their higher end models, their technical capability in design and execution are no less impressive than anything from PP, AP or VC.

Not that this should determine anything, but for those who might care, I sense that JLC is a good brand for men looking to purchase watches that women will admire. I say this based on extensive research using a data sample-size of 1.

My wife, inasmuch as she can be bothered to think about watches at all (she doesn't wear one, or really any jewelry, for that matter), sees Omegas as 'boys' watches'---lots of steel and black and bezels and tool-ish complications, and emphases on space and auto racing and deep-sea diving. It is all indeed very little boy playing with his vroom-vroom toys kinda stuff. Not to say she doesn't appreciate some of the brand's dressier pieces, but even those I think she finds ungainly.

She'd much prefer I wear something simple from JLC, like what @gbesq posted above: thin, leather strap, white dial, stick markers, single sub-dial. It's still masculine (whatever that means), but it just exudes taste and class and elegance.
