So i am thinking about dipping my toe into the Speedy world. I was born in 1972. So maybe a Birth Year speedy, however based on my research 1969-1971 was the Pre-Moon to Moon switchover, so a 1972-1974 would still be a 145.022 however it would really be no different than 1980, or 1990 speedy? This is based on a supposedly Maddox comment to someone that the mid 70's watch "Its just an old Speedy, not special, just old"

So just for discussion..if I wanted to buy something that will try and hold value, AND be a wearer long term. Would I be better off getting:
    1. a 1970 Pre-Moon (close to birthyear), higher entry price, cool features like DON
    2. a LE (20th, Apollo, Panda), ahhh the Blue Panda is calling my name!
    3. or getting a newer version 3570, maybe hit one of my kids birthyear. that will maintain service for 20 years to come.

    Thoughts??

    Tom

As close to birthyear as possible....either year of birth, or perhaps even year of, erm, 'manufacture'.

Hey, is this another Speedmaster thread? Imagine that!

Please expound here - you're not saying you think the service interval for mechanical watches is 20 years, are you?

The Pandas are actually a really nice choice, parts are plentiful both from Omega and on the secondary market and they have a broader appeal than to just collectors as they're really cool looking watches.

Disclosure: I own a Gemini 4 blue panda and have probably convinced about 15 people to buy that model by now.

PS: We are currently working on the technology to hide any threads containing the word Speedmaster from Dennis' view but it may take us some time

You'll be all like "Hey where'd all the Speedy guys go, there were hundreds of them just the other day now its been 4 days without a mention"

and we'll be like "Well you remember at the end of Lord Of The Rings where all the elves hopped on the ship and went across the seas with Frodo, that's sort of what the Speedy guys have done, they're in another place now".

Never saw Lord of the Rings but I'll take your word on it. ;)

I like my sci-fi to be set in the future, not in the past.

I think a 70s -80 a speedy is a good value if budget is of concern.... If this is going to be your main watch and center piece of your collection.. I would try to find the extra 2-3 k and try to go pee moon

I want a '81 birth year.. But no luck.. What are the chances of a '84 being actually "made" in '81? Does that happen?

    I'd do both #2 and #3.

I bought a Gemini 4 (dsio helped me out there) and bought a 3572.50 that is also a birth year for my youngest. The Gemini 4 was purchase 18-24 months ago (don't recall actually) and prices are so far out of control that I am not sure how well it will hold value. Regardless probably the best value of the desirable LE speedmasters at this point in time given this crazy market. The birth years for my children were just another excuse to buy a Speedy. I will also buy a 1996 in the near future.

I have been trying to get my birth year watch (1966), but the best I could do was an Ed White that is one year off. I'm totally out of the pre moon speedy game. Way out of my price point.

I looked at a 1972 Submariner - but that happens to be the year of the Red Sub, like the biggest collectors piece ever..

Yeh, born in 1965 and I missed the boat on getting a birth year Speedy I think. not only are good examples (I'm a bit obsessive) tough to find but current prices are scary and not likely to get better. I have a windfall coming next year but I think prices will be too much by then.
