As a fountain pen user and collector, I think it’s a great idea to give her a pen.

If you don’t mind my making a suggestion, there are a lot of nice pens on eBay but, if you go for one on eBay, check that the seller is a pen dealer and that the pen is serviced and that there are photos of the pen’s written example, for nib thickness and smoothness.

The exchangeable nibs of the Lamys Safari or AL Star are a great plus in my opinion. And they have cool colors.

Thanks for that. I'm actually bidding on a sterling Waterman from the 20s right now. When I started looking around on eBay a couple of days ago, I realized that some of the sellers restore pens and that seems like the best way to go at the moment.

I also have a few of my grandmother's pens stashed away somewhere in my shed, and I may very well take a crack at restoring one. I looked up how to replace the ink sacs on the old lever fill pens and it looks like something that is very doable.

Wet simple to replace the rubber sacs just be careful with the brittle plastic when taking the pen apart.

Yeah, I was reading that using a hair dryer to warm up the barrel before separating the pen is best policy.
