I've found that Mother's Mag Polish can be a beneficial pre-Polywatch step in crystal polishing. Just slightly coarser, it doesn't score crystals and preps them for Polywatch. Very mild on crystals.

I've looked at a can of this sitting on my work bench, but never felt like sacrificing even a bad crystal to try it. For the stout of heart, a duplex can of Clover valve grinding compound (120/280 grit) would either remove deep scratches or else grind a hole through the crystal while attempting it, but sure would require a bunch of finish polishing. Just sayin'.

Some of these polishes work very well- I used mothers on a q-tip for polished surfaces that need a little pop- doesn't take metal off and blends all the micro-scratching to a shine.
Just a note to those who feel adventurous and haven't attempted hand polishing of crystals or cases- mask brushed surfaces and bezels with blue painters tape- they will make brushed surfaces shiny and take paint off a bezel.

Yeah Syrte. The red edge accents the blue strap nicely and the combination goes well on that watch.

Wow, that really pops! Very nice, great choice of strap 👍

Thank you, I’m glad you gents think so as I was a bit afraid it would be overpowering- at the same time I really wanted colors that would echo and play off the colors of the watch.
The lady in the shop thought it really complemented very well the gold color of the dial. (Although it’s doubtful of course she would say it’s ugly if they want return business).

Showed it to the love of my life which turned out to be a big mistake as she loved the watch and strap, she has accepted that I can't just go out and purchase such a lovely combination but 🙁

Damn. So sorry to have triggered trouble in paradise. Here’s a suggestion: if you can break the piggy bank you get her one of those amazing Elgin “Lady and the tiger” watches. They come up once in a while and are the most beautiful art deco ladies watches. Problem is; they’re a bit expensive at around 1200 euros but don’t you gents spend as much on your Rolexes and Modern Omegas? Elgin has lots of beautifully enameled watches from that era.
PS and once you get the watch, whatever it is, I’ll be happy to go out and be your agent to design and commission a wonderful strap for it from one of Paris’s amazing professional strap makers.

I did enjoy this thread and all of the responses.

Whilst not technically in lockdown I was able to spy on and purchase a sub £50 watch which I am ending wearing today.
Bought a couple of weeks ago from a local vintage arcade for the pricey sum of £35
Lovely seiko PVD 7a38 from 85.

Would still welcome anyone else to contribute to the bargain thread.

I’m always game for this !

And as it past dinner time I’ll post this one from a couple of months back in its “as received” state. It’s up there with the most disgusting watches I’ve ever received, but just look how good that dial looks under the crazed crystal. About £15 to buy, taken up to about £40 with shipping and import costs. Probably the best deal I’ve had in a year.

That’s a cool watch!
