That'd be the missing link?

Sigma power! 😀

Gorgeous !
Like a lot of you, I am a watch lover with a bunch of fun pieces in the mix. I bought this 1970 Datejust back in 2020 after obsessing about the ghost dial variants for a while. It is pretty much the perfect watch for me, robust and classy. Whilst not a 1016. The 1600 has a sporty no-nonsense look that makes it look more low-key than my 114270. I am also a freak for vintage IWC, but I have come to evaluate any watch I am looking at against my one Rolex Datejust 1600.
That's an absolutely fantastic watch. The dial is a perfect 10.
The plain bezel also makes sense to keep it a bit more casual and versatile.

Thank you! Thinking about having the case tuned up.

you mean polished?
The dial and bezel are so sharp, I’d like to have the case tuned up to match. The case shows some past polishing and I’d like to turn back the clock.

I mean, why not. Of course the collectors always want unpolished watches. But frankly, if it's your watch and it'll remain yours, do what you like! If it has been polished before, why not again. Is it more like micro-scratches, or deeper ones? If it's just very superficial, manual polishing with Cape Cod cloths works super well and you only take off the thinnest layer of material.

If you are obsessed, you know when the case is a bit soft!

I gotta admit I love the look. It’s not about “Rolex” on the dial they just always strike me as well balanced, good looking and not flashy. It would be probably my first choice for a Rolex. I was actually gearing up for one but got sidetracked with the planet ocean which I really enjoy. I decided to talk to my wife and told her I will bypass a DJ and seek out an explorer unless I can land a DJ in a similar price range.

I’m not so much settling as the explorers are iconic and I love the look. If someone sees fault in my plan here please tell me I’m just seeing explorers available at “decent” prices but tbh most of the watches I buy are not really “decent prices” as I don’t need anymore watches how did I end up with 70? Granted most of them are still buried in storage but we are moving soon I’ll have them all back, all good things in all good time.

Every picture you guys posted just strikes me as a perfect proportioned watch. Plus I didn’t mention it for a while but my mom passed last month and she thinks she gave me money to buy a Rolex and made me promise I would. She never did I never took it as I want everything settled properly but since I made that promise to my mother I feel bound to fulfill it.

My mommy thought of my watch habit even as she suffered asking me if I got the Rolex.

The explorer and the datejust are both great options. Explorer being more subtle and thinner. A real benefit of the datejust is a jubilee; it is so comfortable. There are also millions of dial, bezel and bracelet combinations.

As for prices, you can definitely find decent DJs below the price of an Explorer. Between the two... tough choice. Maybe take the bracelet into consideration. What's more your style the Oyster (Explorer) or Jubilee (DJ). The Explorer "must" be on Oyster. DJ normally on Jubilee (but Oyster is also doable).

Personally, my grail Rolex is a 1016 Explorer. I much prefer the round numerals of the vintage Explorers over the "edgy" numerals one since the 90s. One day I'll save up for one. And i wouldn't sell my DJ when I do..
