Hi People, I am having a hard time figuring out if this watch is a real Omega produced for the british solider. I don't understand how this watch was made in Illinois yet have the markings on the back above the 6B/159 shows it to be a british Military issue. Also I have read that the movement needs to be a 30T2, is that true? And if so, is it? I can't tell. I would appreciate any correct information. Thank you
I don't know much about military watches, but if you look on this forum for "military" and "recase" you will come up with lots of hits (eg: https://omegaforums.net/threads/interesting-raf-on-ebay.27036/#post-300440) I understand a lot of military watches were recased after the war?
My uneducated guess is that it may be a Dennison case, possibly an aluminium one where the re-furbishers (sometimes RAF Instrument Fitters) had to use whatever they could get their hands on, thus the Elgin caseback re-engraved on a pantograph. The hands don't look Omega to me and I don't know enough about period markings to comment. For conclusive answers please wait for somebody who knows what they're really talking about.
Looks like a put together watch to me. Certainly non-conforming in numerous ways to an authentic military issued example. I would steer clear.
The case was made by the Illinois Watch Case Co. in Elgin Illinois, and is a nickel alloy. http://elginwatches.org/history/illinois_watch_cases.html As to the omega movement I will defer to the people who know.
