Hi all, I own this watch and it was passed down to me about ten years ago. All I have known for that time is that it didn’t work but looks nice on my wrist.

However, I work for the NHS and most the
day I am not allowed to wear a watch. Therefore this good looking watch has stayed in a draw most of the time I’ve owned it.

I presumed it would cost around £300 to be serviced and restored and would like to know what’s the best way forward in order to get identification, dating, model? Also, do you have restoration advice? Should I get it restored or sell it on in this original state? What is it’s value?

It has this awful spring strap that is not original so I am hoping it hasn’t been messed with in the past? I know it is gold capped but that’s about all?

Thanks in advance for any advice!

    Francis

It is a quite rare model, 2887. Google Omega Constellation 2887 and see what you have.

Make sure when serviced they do not polish it, or touch the dial and hands at all. A new crystal and a movement service and that will be amazing.

Well thank you so much, that is such good advice and exactly what I’m after on this forum. I’m thinking black leather strap too actually?

A nice black leather would definitely be better than that flex bracelet !

I'd advise keeping that watch. It's a good, quality watch in great condition. Someone like Mitka or WatchGuy UK would be ideal for servicing it. As above please don't be tempted to try and clean the dial or polish the case. Over restoring watches knocks a huge amount of value off.

On the other hand if you are determined to sell, sell as is. Collectors prefer to use their own watchmaker so you will net more money selling as unserviced.

That is really great to hear you say. Thank you very much for your time and effort to share your expertise. I would love to see inside it actually to see if everything is as it should be? Should the back be removed professionally with a special tool? Thanks David you’ve made my day :)

Thanks Nino, I totally agree with you. I would have loved to have seen it with its original. Btw really sorry for the typo, very embarrassing.

You need a tool to open the caseback. They're readily available for a couple of quid on amazon/eBay but you need to be very careful as it's easy to scratch the caseback if you're not sure how to do it carefully.

If you're thinking of selling, pop to a local watchmaker and have them remove the caseback, take a picture and oh it in your listing.

If you're keeping it (I would!), I'd wait until you send it to service. Both the watchmakers I listed above will take pics at various stages of service so you can see what the movements like.

I assume you're UK? What region/county? I'm in Yorkshire but have no qualms sending my watches to Christian (WatchGuy) or Mitka who are also in the UK but further south.

I’ve never lost a watch in the post.

If you do send it, just ensure you use RM Special Delivery, not just RM Recorded.

For those of us not in the UK, what does this mean - I know what the NHS is but why can't you wear a watch?

Hygiene reasons as well as work surroundings, eg MRI, probably.

Yes, sorry for the late reply. If you work in a clinical area such as myself then the NHS has a policy that you are bare below the elbow for infection control. Only a wedding ring is permitted.
