Recently I saw that gun thread again (beautiful guns by the way) and @Trev asked for no politics.

But to be honest, after the recent dramatic event in Texas where kids were beeing murdered with a gun from a 18 year old, is a thread about guns still ok?

I know. OF is a private thing. If you dont like it, go somewhere else. But still... Maybe time has changed?

Why would you start this?

My over/under on this thread getting shut down by mods is 100 post. I’ll bet under.

You must be living a different reality if you think gun enthusiasts will change anything about their actions as a result of kids being murdered. That thread is going nowhere.

My heart hurts because I have a kindergartner. But as a legal gun owner I would have done everything in my power to go after that guy. No way a police officer would have stopped me from running in after him to save as many kids that I could.

I fully support shutting down any thread that makes me feel uncomfortable about the country I live in.

I’ll be honest the gun thread has always made me feel a little… eh… but that’s likely my political beliefs, growing up 20 minutes from Newtown Connecticut, and my overall anger that us Americans can’t even agree that we should do more to help keep guns out of the hands of people who have a history of domestic violence. God forbid we have a waiting period to pick up your gun….

Anyway. I don’t care if people talk guns here, I just wish America could get its shit together and stop shooting kids.

There are dangerous and deranged people with and without guns. The members posting here on OF seems like friendly enthusiasts discussing one of their interests - not that different from the photography/HI-FI/pet threads really.

I don't understand the US stance on rights for gun ownership and I feel sorry for them. A Danish US correspondent wrote an article the other day called "Only in the US Do Seven Year Olds Go to School Fearing Getting Shot.".

Illinois specifically Chicago doesn’t have a waiting period problem. It’s illegal gun problem. Guns Coming from Indiana with less laws? Yea probably some. But criminals or anyone can get a gun illegally. Just have to find the right people.

I suggest that a significant number of we gun owners want to see this solved as well because hurting people is bad.

This is a point that gets lost in the shuffle because the major pro-gun voices that dominate the debate (e.g., NRA, politicians) tend to move focus away from gun legislation to other topics (e.g. increased police presence, arming teachers, limiting video game access, etc). The issue is not ownership, per se, it’s lack of regulation, which is an unfortunate non-starter for many in power.

Anyway, IBTL, I guess.

Delete gun thread? Up to the ruling junta. Either way doesn’t matter.

I own dozens and dozens of guns.
If law passed to turn in or confiscation was law of the land, I’d turn them all in to stop massacres.
I would dump them if we could bring these kids back. Hope I said this the right way.
America is a deeply sick country when it comes to value of human life in numerous ways.

I don’t think the one thread about guns is really an issue at all, especially as it stays away from the surrounding politics and focuses more on the craftsmanship and quality wise, pieces like highly decorated 1911s rather than el-cheapo ARs.

We don’t have a sensible way of banning firearm discussion entirely here anyway as Omega sponsors James Bond, with gun and bullet motif watch designs and campaigns openly featuring Omegas watches along side guns. Omega then also sponsors both the summer and Winter Olympics including shooting and sports combined with shooting and making specialist starting guns and instruments for shooters. This makes it very difficult to ever ban firearm discussion completely as it just doesn’t make sense when they appear in Omegas marketing so frequently.

I do have no problem with the laws in Australia following Port Arthur and they’ve served us very well here at preventing such things but I don’t think the guys in that thread discussing more artisanal weapons are a concern as we have that here in Australia even with our laws.
