Is it time for early 90s Omegas to be considered vintage?

To me plastic crystal + tritium is the combo of vinatage but it can not be applied for speedmaster. So for speedmaster I vote step dial is the last of the vintage line, later can be neo vintage.

But then that would mean post ‘76 wouldn’t be vintage- which it is.

A picture of the model and year, color of my first car. Definitely would not consider it vintage 😁

But that car sure is classic, and everyone says so - so imho that defines it as vintage-in-waiting: only more passage of time is needed now.

I think of vintage as before about 1970. Or
Different strokes - in California, a 150 year old house is historical; in Europe it's not even unusual. So, I can understand why some of you guys think e.g.1998 is a lifetime ago and therefore deserves a label. But - mediocre + old = mediocre, however much time passes. Surely, vintage = potential classic + passage of time + user acclaim.
Something else that disrupts the cars / watches comparison is the quartz crisis. That for me is the Great Divide, between watches as the essential companion of everyone's daily life, and the self-conscious piece of art and technology we see today. No passage of time can change that, imho, more relevant classification.
(Actually, petrol vehicles may one day be in a similar position, I guess.)
Having said all that, I would be very interested in what folks think makes a modern classic / future vintage, it would be nice to collect some newer pieces with an eye on the future collectors in the family. Thoughts?

I agree that the quartz crisis is a much more significant division between eras than an arbitrary 25 years or whatever.

No. Anything made in the age of the internet I cannot consider 'vintage'. Those are modern times. For me, pre early 80s is the bar.

Mate you popping some brewskis on the hood of your trans-am while listing to Domino Dancing on cassette will never be outdated

Not bad, not bad at all!😉

I actually did drive a Trans Am in college. 👍 1977 model in full-on “Smokey & the Bandit” livery. First car I ever bought with my own money - a HS graduation present for myself. I have a picture around here somewhere.. maybe will dig it up now that you’ve brought it to mind.

Brewskies on the hood... guilty as charged... and some other mood altering substances as well. 😗

Cassettes yes. 👍 Domino Dancing - no.👎 A decade late, I was well out of college by then and anyway not my genre.

And as for “vintage” this thread is as expected - all over the place. 😜

For me the 90’s were yesterday, and the 80’s the day before. The 70’s - early 70’s - I could live with that.

When I was a kid I loved 50’s do-wop music- I always wanted to play it in the car, my father hated it- it was the music of his high-school and college era and he said he got sick of it hearing it all the time back then. This was the early 80’s so it was ancient to me- but to him it was yesterday. I hear U2 on the “classic rock” station now and I am offended- Joshua Tree came out last week- right?!?!

Maybe it’s like people. Over 35 years is vintage. Over 45 is antique.

By most definitions vintage is considered 25 years and over.
I feel its an age thing.Being in my late 50's,watches which are ONLY 25 years old seem fairly new.Watches made in the 60's ,now that's vintage.
Ask a 20 year old what he thinks of an 80's watch and chances are he will tell you it's vintage.
Its 20 years older than him/her.

when the new millennials heard for the first time of vinyl music in the midst of digital boom,
they thought vinyl is the new cool audio format. so vinyl is not yet vintage and it went crazy lately. 😁😉

And for some of us- it never went away.

I’ve mentioned it in other threads. When I bought my GMT in 2002, it was just an old Rolex that was out of style with its garish colors- nobody wanted them. My very fashionable boss asked why I would spend money on such a tacky thing rather than something sleek like his Raymon Weil or Cartier tank. Plus, the 16750 was an orphan- not a 1675, and not the fancy new one with the gold rings- it was a transitional and fairly unloved. At the time it’s was all about the sub-sub,sub,sub. It was only 19 years old when I bought it (not vintage) and it was cheap. Ask anyone now if they think a 1983 GMT is a “vintage” or “classic” and you will get a resounding YES!

Time can be kind to some things and not to others. But as things age and manage to survive, there will always be a group that cherishes them as collectibles. The Casio calculator watch is making a comeback lately. The show Stranger Things kicked off a huge revival of early 80’s style- just like Madmen did for 60’s style a decade and a half ago.
It’s all a matter of perspective, and if you don’t get it- then you are on the “older” side of it.

Interesting thread. And I’ll humbly share my summer car that I bought for fun about 15 years ago. As a child of the 80s, these have always appealed to me. I paid next to nothing for it then, and now, according to my younger friends, I’m driving around in something “classic”. Never would have thunk it.

Although prices are rising, very good examples of the 3590.50 can still be found under 4K if you’re patient in your search.

I for one am curious about the outcome of this thread.
Because when I create a thread for 90s Omega watchs, I will know whether I need to create the thread in "MODERN OMEGA WATCHES" or "VINTAGE OMEGA WATCHES HELP, DISCUSSION AND ADVICE".
Now I can get out of my labyrinth!😀😀
