I've seen dials of watches that if it was me doing the description of its condition due to aging, I would use "early signs of pitting" instead of "light patina" as used by some Sellers. I'm not a materials expert but don't think what I'd call early pitting will ever transform into the more desirable, smooth-looking, color transformation or discoloration -either even or uneven- of the dial. Or could this be possible? I understand natural-occuring patina on dials can take any shape or color but to me, pitting is a different phenomena that Sellers want to market as patina - or is it not? Do you consider pitting a type or sub category of patina?

While I do not disagree with you assessment, I believe the classification of patina on watch dials remains a largely unregulated field that, unfortunately, we all will have to cope with for many sales yet to come.:D You can add "bubbling" or blistering to your list of dial phenomena that are described as patina at various times and are usually found undesirable by most purchasers.

the truth according to the Fritz:

-aging that looks like shit is pitting or dirt

-aging that pleases the eye is patina

-terms as used by ebay sellers are usually bullshit

please note: current definitions aided by Newcastle Brown Ale for accuracy

I'm nominating these definitions - although subjective - as a sticky to the Forum as future reference for all mankind! ::rimshot::

One man's pitting is another man's patina...

Going to have to buy some Newcastle Brown Ale before I purchase my next watch to help my eyes sharp. Good description.

One of my favourite descriptions is "evenly oxidised" (describing a movement, not a dial).
