Was watching this auction on a 69 DO90 speedy that ended at $5200 with papers... https://www.ebay.com/itm/Omega-Spee...vip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.m43663.l44720Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
I think it sold wayyyy too high. How can you even tell that there is a DO90??? and that red tip in the chrono hand?
It looks ok. I bit polished, but the real curious thing (not to sound xenophobic) is that its coming from Thailand. Hope its legit for the buyer The very first time I got burned was buying from that part of the world.
I actually got my SM300 from the same seller (direct not on ebay) and it checked out but my original suspicion was also that it didn't sell well because of the seller's location...
Yes I think the seller is going to be disappointed. It was originally a BIN for USD8,890 before becoming an auction. I am guessing he saw the tropical 69 going for USD12,900 and wanted to try his luck.
The hands and bezel were ok, the rest I really didn't care for; I think the photo's were too complimentary to the watch, which I think is pretty rough. I think the buyer took some risk on this one.
This 145.012-067 also went for a good price. Perhaps the market is softening. [Edit: Yes, I understand that the photos are not good and that there are no movement photos, but I think most of us are familiar with how this seller operates, and know that he has a lot of fresh estate pieces.] https://www.ebay.com/itm/Vintage-Om...vip=true&rt=nc&_trksid=p2047675.m43663.l10137Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
Observing sales from afar the past few months does make me think the market has gotten soft overall, whatever the reasons may be. Probably a combination of fewer dealers bidding relatively high on watches to sell for more, and more people saving their money for upcoming auctions.
I think location played a big factor personally. Papers are cool, but you never really know with these hand written ones. Went a little low, but not overly surprised. No reserve auction are always a gamble. You need the right bidders to be there at the right time...
I agree with this. Seems there have been a lot of threads recently along these lines. In this case, location probably had something to do with it also as others have mentioned.
Posted about a pretty soft result myself earlier, before seeing this thread. One thing that wasn't mentioned above is that most of the lume is missing from the dial, which is definitely going to hurt the price.
As I commented on your other post, I'm really starting to wonder about eBay auctions (as opposed to BIN/best offer)). Papers on a watch that age are quite rare.
I prefer listing things as BIN/Best Offer if I am in no rush to sell. I find eBay auctions to be really variable! Listing with a reserve is an option but I've noticed that a reserve chases away a fair number of buyers.
Now that ebay doesn't charge more if you start a listing at a higher price, I'm surprised more people don't just do that vs setting a reserve
Yes I am more likely to stay away from a reserve auction than one with a higher starting price. It is because the reserve price is hidden and you may end up wasting your time if the seller has priced it too high.
