is it just me, or is the pendulum coming back? ... I keep reading "nothing above 42mm" in WTT threads more and more often ... thoughts? Al
Yes, the bigger sizes seem t be here to stay. I used to think 38 was the larger acceptable option with 40 being a tool watch or bling option. Now 40 seems classic, 42 the norm and more and more you see up to 46 even on dress watches. Which is a bit much for most wrists really.
I don't know that the pendulum is swinging back, but perhaps sizes are at a plateau. At least I hope they are
Given the trajectory of the world's most important economies, I'd be very surprised to see watches increase in size. I expect that less flashy and smaller will be the trend for some time to come.
The bigger the better here is a Seiko I modded, all by my self! I know... It's a quartz, but it has an alarm
90.7mm, Actually it is a desk clock. I made it up with aluminum wire "wire lugs" and a cheapo stretch band, as a joke for another thread about ridiculously large watches. https://omegaforums.net/threads/will-this-make-my-wrist-look-fat.27462/
I boxed up my newer watches, everything above 38mm. Was going to sell but thought I should wait. Will probably end up on the bay a year from now.
hi, not sure if I came across as I wanted ... my msg in the OP was that it seems in terms of supersizes - the worst is behind us ... I get the feeling (anecdotical evidence) that there is a smooth push back towards more "normal" sizes (say, around 40mm) looks like those 48mm Breitlings/Hublots/Uboat are a tough sell
I'm a fairly big ol' boy yet am delighted with wearing 34mm to 38mm vintage watches. Only the Speedmaster is larger around here.
Anything above speedy size I stop looking/reading. Must say @Nobel Prize has had a few IWC,s on the WRUW lately that I do like that may be over 42mm.? Oddly I have found I have a 8mm tolerance 35 - 42
Ah... But they're not. The TZC pilot vintage is 40. Big for the time but nothing compared to the current big pilot. The portofino is 39. They don't make them that size anymore. The Portuguese chrono is right between 41 and 41 but the dial carries most of the real estate since the bezel is under the domed crystal.
Thanks Sergio I do like the Portuguese chrono but thought it might have been bigger. Love that caseback.
They where not making them that big then. The latest Laureus is bigger, this is the traditional size. I love that watch and was going to get white or black face until I discovered the Laureus. Took me a long time and money to find
The pendulum will swing when they can't sell many pieces at 48mm. People will realize smaller watches wear more comfortably and say "what were we thinking?" 15 years later large watches will be in vogue again. ad infinitum
The horological equivalent of the Hemline Index? I've got girls' wrists, so I'm very happy with a 35mm watch.
