    There's a watch on Ebay:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Omega-Seamaster-DeVille-Swiss-Made-1960s-Automatic-Mens-Rare-Watch-MX40/262804979356?_trksid=p5411.c100167.m2940&_trkparms=aid=222007&algo=SIC.MBE&ao=1&asc=20140131123730&meid=ee5410cb7d524949aeae61c5c1880992&pid=100167&rk=4&rkt=15&sd=272513724895Purchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network

It's my first serious watch that I would be buying. I'm attracted to the fact that it's vintage, classy, and restored, but I'm not sure if this is a mistake and a waste of money for a watch.

I don't wear suits all the time, because I work at the Post Office. I probably wouldn't even wear something like this at a Post Office since I'd be worried about scuffing it somehow.

Bottom line: The watch is and looks nice, but is it TOO nice?

In general, buying a watch is an emotional purchase, not a rational one. So, I would say it's only irresponsible to buy a watch if you're spending money that could be better put to use reducing your debt load or something that you actually should spend money on. However, if you've got a little extra money to spend, I think you should spend it as you wish. If that means a watch, so be it :)

I do not speak for the veracity of this particular watch though, as I'm not knowledgeable about the model.

Way overpriced, by about five times. "Restored" in this case means over polished and tarted up for sale to someone who doesn't know any better.

You were wise to ask first.

    Dodged a bullet.

This seller has over 11,000 feedback ratings @ 100% by mostly selling restored (polished to death and redialed) vintage watches for what seem like super inflated prices. Crazy!

Great, glad I asked. That would've been embarrassing to purchase. I'm clueless when it comes to watches. I'm not sure what to look for because there's just too many of them out there. I like classic looking watches like the one shown.

Any suggestions when it comes to Omega watches?

If the seller told me that they could go as low as $1,900, would you say that's still way over priced?

Yes, still way over priced by about $1300. You should stick around here, read some threads, discover what exactly it is that you like and then stake out the Private Watch Sales Forum until some attractive, well priced prey pops up. Shouldn't take too long!

Take your time. Do some homework. Enjoy the process. For the money you are considering spending you could have three very nice watches.

Smoke and mirrors. Typical ebay stuff made shinny and expensive looking. It could be an attractive daily wearer if purchased solely for this reason....for $300.00. The asking price is ridiculous but as they say..

I bought a De Ville also from the 60's... not as shinny and polished as that one but mine was great for what it was and it was only 1/4 the cost. IMG_9135.JPG

I read @X350 XJR'a comment before I saw the listing and thought to myself, "it can't really be over priced by 5 times". Then I opened the link!

This seller and their feedback demonstrates that there is essentially 2 vintage watch markets, the collector market where we generally pay what a watch is actually worth, and the hit and run vintage market where one off buyers see glossy eBay ads, jazzed up descriptions, well lit pictures and positive feedback which reinforces a buyers confidence to essentially buy an over polished, over priced, often redialled watch, that is in that 'restored' condition because it likely aged terribly.

OP if you're getting a vintage watch it really is worth taking some time, even just a few hours, to read some threads here as well as some for sale ads to get an idea of what's what. If this is to be your main watch, it's worth the effort to avoid buying an overpriced piece of glittery shit like some that are out there.
