Ireland - I just got the call for the Silver Snoopy 50th. I have the money, but I'm unemployed right now. Eek.

Context:

I put my name down years ago. I'm told by Weirs in Dublin just now that the Silver Snoopy 50th Anniversary Edition Speedy has "finally" started coming in. They say they can expect "about two a year". I can come see/buy "mine" tomorrow.

An important personal consideration is I was made redundant just over two years ago. I'm still unemployed. However, I am reasonably comfortable in the short term because of the redundancy payoff. That comfort will not last another year.

So here is what I am thinking right now: I am gonna buy the bloody thing. Furthermore I am going to wear the bloody thing.

But are there older wiser heads here to tell me I'm being an idiot? Is the watch shite?

I will of course consult the other half before I decide fully.

If you need to sell it quickly, would you recover all or most of the purchase price? If yes, then sure. If no, maybe take a pause.

You have to consider that retail price is very close to resale price (and that includes mint conditions).
And I don't think the cow has been completely milked, production and deliveries seems to be going on.

Mine came within a week when I was expecting 6 months to build up the cash. She said, "are you ready?" I said no, but I would see her Saturday. Made a call to the bank to get a credit limit increase on a zero percent card and bought it . But you do what you need to do.

I wouldn't put myself in a financially questionable position for any watch, and certainly not for one featuring a cartoon character.

Only you know what's best. Personally, I would pass on the opportunity and wait until my financial/employment situation stabilizes.

On the surface this strikes me as fairly dangerous enabling seeking, but there's a ton we simply do not know about your financial situation or future job prospects.

This is obviously contingent on the details of your financial situation. Watches aren’t as liquid as people think. You might quickly sell it to a retail shop, but don’t expect to get back what you paid.

On a more abstract note, I would not buy a luxury watch if I were unemployed and there is impending financial trouble in a year. Not a good idea in the slightest.

I’d respectfully decline.

If you have been unemployed for two years I wouldn't be splashing out the money at this time. Your redundancy cash won't last forever, than what? The economy is not as strong as the 'experts' keep telling us and 2026 may be rough. Selling is never as easy as it sounds, and it's always a hassle. Hold your fire on Snoopy.

Sound advice.

Something the cool kids used to say, but I haven't heard in a while;
YOLO

but remember "a Snoopy isn't just for Christmas" 😁
At least this "bad boy 😤" / puppy won't steal your home-brand baked beans or peanut butter (which you can survive on 👍)

Probably not an older nor wiser head, but I say don’t do it. If you have the money, but a brand new one on the grey once you’ve gotten a new job and have settled in.

Coming from a dude that turned down a 321 when he was unemployed. Not that it was my dream, but it was tempting. Bought my Snoopy grey a couple of months ago and don’t regret it one bit. I paid maybe $1k more than I would from the OB with the recent price hikes.

A gathering place for watch hoarding addicts is just not the place to find sound advice. The fact that you ask here tells me you are looking for enablers. So buy it!

I’m beating a dead horse, but I’d try to only spend cash on a luxury item when your core financial objectives are already funded.

If I were unemployed, I’d wait.

This is a terrible idea. Watches are an unnecessary luxury and should only be purchased with truly disposable income. I can't believe people are telling you to do it.

Agreed. OP was made redundant "over two years ago", is still unemployed, and has a runway that lasts less than a year, best case. Buying a luxury watch now is a TERRIBLE idea.

Put it this way, if the job market is tough and you're down to a couple of months of money left and suddenly your water heater fails, how will you be feeling about that Snoopy you bought then?
