I am pretty sure... There will be a time, when this new version will be "highly" collectible...
But for now.. this "rocked hand" is just hilarious. Its in my eyes neither cool nor good looking. Seems like the Flick Flack Design team had some spare time to fill...

To be clear.. beside of the price and the size. The rest this watch is stunning. I always liked it a lot. Black and yellow is killer.

The more I see pics of it on real people's wrists - I like it quite a lot. I figure, if I had $14K on it, I could also afford to just have a watch maker swap out that second hand for me 😁.

This update is the classic, "an answer to a question nobody asked" situation. Every honest discussion of it struggles to explain why it was done and then focuses on the rocket! It isn't a 'jumping the shark' release, but it is swimming among the sharks. Omega could have done so much more with this watch to justify its almost 50% price increase since 2018. If they would have used the grey ceramic case as the base with the new movement they could have come up with a new watch to complement the Apollo 8, but to me this update just comes across as a lazy attempt to raise the price without giving the owner something really compelling and interesting for the extra dough.

This one was a bit of a conundrum for Omega.
My take on this is that Omega is updating their catalog and an 1861 offspring (1869) is really part of the previous generation movements.
Not only that but even after all the price hikes of the last few years the Apollo8 for what it is, was really part of their previous generation price strategy.

With the upcoming update for the true DSotM collection (the 9300 movement ones) probably this year the question was raised: What to do in anticipation with the odd one out in this collection, the Apollo8. Kill it, or refresh it?

It was probably still too profitable, or just perfectly in line with the catalog strategy when it comes to the special editions to just discontinue it. Omega is reluctant to do limited editions so a whole new apollo8 as yet another 55th celebration just didn't fit in their strategy. So we make it almost the same? Is that the best option here? Can't we just discontinue it? Does it have to keep a place in the catalog when we look at the next few years? Reviews have said that the Apollo8 (the original) was the best one of all the DSotM editions (black, grey, white, pitch, vintage etc. etc.)

The pricing of 15,800 euros is part of it. This is also in preparation for the next gen DSotM automatic watches. They will be more expensive than this one.

This refresh of the Apollo8 was never to be a huge hit for Omega, just a preparation and lining everything up for what comes next.
I just wonder why they made such a fuss over it...

My local OB reached out to me & said I could come by & see it in person. I cannot wait to make the time to see it!

Wait, where is the spirate? That should start getting integrated now. Especially at the price point.

I think we care more about how they’ll revamp their core models, Not these special edition pieces.
Good point. Have not heard much buzz from Omega or anywhere else about spirate after that marketing build up & reveal. I am curious to see if it will end up being an addition to more references as we roll into the future or only used sparingly in some releases with a juicy price increase to go with it.

I got to see it yesterday at my OB, almost bought it on the spot

I am a huge fan of the original version, and this one just improves on that. The moon face dial and rear/movement additions is stunning in person, the level of detail is impressive. It looks significantly better than the original. That alone is worth the price of admission. The Saturn V seconds hand looks like it’s floating there, it’s raised up which gives it a really nice 3D effect. Also has a high level of detail on it, the USA in it needs to be seen with a loupe or magnifier but it’s awesome.
It wears smaller than 44.25, I have a roughly 7-7.2” wrist and it felt just about right for it. It’s very thin as well.

I would say that this, like the original, needs to be seen in person to really be appreciated.

Omega, home of the unlimited limited editions. Gets laughable at some point in spite of the inner quality of the pieces.

Just been into my local OB to view the new Apollo 8. Helpfully had the original one side by side to compare. The level of detail is just stunning and I could spend a lot of time staring and appreciating it. Also wears very well on the wrist and the strap is super comfortable.

is it for me? Nope as I can’t love it enough nor am I bought into the theme enough to justify the price. Totally get why some would go for it though but only if you didn’t already have the original version. Can’t see that this one offers enough to make a change worthwhile.

Curious to see what it does to used prices on the originals.

Very little, I suspect.

If I had more money than I knew what to do with, I’d buy it in a heartbeat. I wouldn’t say that about most of Omega’s watches.

I tend to agree, but I'm like that with all manufacturers.
The MK II DSOTM has some very impressive details and the execution is above their norm if the pics on the internet are anything to go by.

Hard to say.
If one were to pick up the MK II, it could be a trigger for the creation of a stand alone sub collection comprised of both which will underpin the MK I.
I can see where awareness of the genera will be raised due to the new one, as it's so good.
Or it could render the old one redundant👎

As I've said before, I found the earlier one underwhelming on closer visual inspection and.couldn't justify the asking price.
The new one is quite worthwhile in comparison if I were inclined to play in the novelty Speedy space.

A nice love letter to the original here which might sum up why it is so popular with many people.
A step too far (and too expensive) probably sums up the new one.

A little love for the original though, as you can see, I did change the strap and clasp.

What will be the improvements to "justify" the price increase?
Ceramic bezel?
Spirate maybe?
Precious metals?

¿Cuál es tu marco de referencia?

I was visiting Melbourne Australia for a workshop, and was able to visit both an Omega Boutique and a Swatch shop. Bought one of these, tried on the other... you can guess which! I have to say, the DSotM Apollo 8 is absolutely stunning in real life! Worth it? That's another question, but I think it'll sell. Between the MoonSwatch as entry level for some, the "standard" Speedy, and all the special editions, I think Omega is covering the bases with some smart segmentation. The DNA is consistent. And: it's a business. They know what they're doing. So buckle up and enjoy the ride!

I think it's the first time I've witnessed a re-edition of a "special anniversary version" watch so close in time. If we were talking about Seiko it would seem more credible...

Sorry, don't understand what you're talking about.
And this is an English speaking forum.
