    Hi everyone,

A couple of weeks ago I posted about an Omega Speedmaster 2998-6 I found a couple of years ago when cleaning out my granfdather's house and had a great response. I told my mother about the watch and the forum and she was really excited to know about her dad's watch story.

Anyway, she told me his dad had inherited her a Rolex but had no idea what to make of it and to be honest neither do I. Since I can't afford them I've never done much research about them so I wanted to get everyone's help

I haven't been able to open the case to have a look at the movement, if anyone can tell me how to open it I would really appreciate it. I was able to remove one side of the bracelet and it appears to have the number 1277371 inscribed on the watch's side (not sure if this is relevant)

Below are some photos, any information will be greatly appreciated since we would like to know more about this watch and its history

    Thanks!

If you are able to also remove the bracelet on the other side, you should find the reference number there between the lugs.
    SN points to 1965/66.

Not hugely valuable like the Speedmaster, smaller size than most people will wear today and dial isn't in the best condition.

That's a beautiful burnt caramel dial, don't let anybody try to clean it up.

I strongly recommend you have it serviced by a good watchmaker, only clean, oil, adjust is needed. Don't polish the case or do any other tarting up, the watch is beautiful as it is.

Do not attempt to open the caseback! It requires the correct tool and some skill to do without damaging it.

    Keep us updated.

The design 6430 matches the speedking reference. Not a spectacular comment on my part but at least the case doesn't say "5513" or something other.

So you have a mid sixties speedking that could be worth 1200 to 1800 depending on condition. The camel dial may bring it up slightly in price the pics are not good enough to really tell the condition and value but you'll be somewhere around there

The Speedking is a manual winder, and the movement is likely based on an ETA calibre. I'm 99 44/100 % certain the dial didn't leave the factory that way. My reference indicates a date of approximately 1958. Manual wind Rolex watches are generally not highly sought after by most Rolex collectors.

I'm sure the dial is original, but has aged to this caramel hue, so you're technically correct that it wasn't that way when new.

It should be from about 1964, given the persistence of alpha hands with the tritium dial.

That is a very nice watch. The diameter of slightly over 32mm it is not very 'en voque' today.

Anyhow it has a fantactic appearance and the tropical dial is to die for.

What it really is, is the type of watch a tropical sub owner is likely to buy his wife as a gift, which she'll wear because she doesn't want to hurt his feelings even though she would rather a modern Guess or Michael Kors.

The watch is old enough that the month and date it was cased are likely stamped inside the case back.......that is, if the case back is ever removed.

@dsio you are most likely right. But a true tropical lover will also wear and enjoy it, because he sees the beauty beyond the small diameter.
