Information on Omega Seamaster 300 (165.014)

Hello everyone,

for the last few days, I have been pondering whether to buy a Seamaster 300 because I really like the look. Having found some first information on this forum, I realised how difficult that might become and started researching a lot (since I am currently on holidays I spent the better part of the last 3 days reading about these watches 😀).

I have various Omega watches (and some Longines, I confess) from the 30s to the 70s, most of them bought years ago and I will gladly post some pictures and information on these once I am back home.

So now the question, which is regarding a specific sales post on Ebay: https://www.ebay.de/itm/388742028465 :

Might this be an original in this combination? I get really confused with so many new things, but here are my thought so far:

  • caliber 552 ist correct, the serial no. suggests 1962, which should be right for an early 165.014
  • the case back has 165-014 stamped inside. Most of these I found have 165.014 and the year behind the dash. I first thought this was wrong, but it seems that in some rare cases the model no. is actually written that way (found a simlar case back photo here https://www.omegaseamaster300.com). Not completely sure though.
  • the crown should be a Naiad crown I think, but do all of them have that little Naiad star sign in the middle of the Omega logo? If yes, this would be a replacement crown (which would be fine for me).
  • The biggest puzzle is about the dial. The hands could be correct (although I believe they suggest 1963 onwards), but didn't the open 6 and open 9 on the dial come later? I figured it might be a 1963 oder 1964 dial and hands with a 1962 caliber 552, which they had left over, but then I saw the "T Swiss Made T" (only partly visible on the first photo). Wasn't that only introduced with the 165.024?

So many questions and sorry about the detail, but I really tried to find out myself what was going on and am now stuck. I have contacted the seller and he said that it might original according to a friend, but he doesn't know himself. Getting more photos seems a bit tricky, too, and at least will take time (apparently it's not with the seller at the moment, but with a contractor that does the shipping for him).

I would very much appreciate help from anyone who has looked at these watches for much longer than I have.

Thank you and best regards,

caliberlust

PS: I have bought all my previous watches simply because I liked the look. I have never before really researched any watch, so this is new for me. Not being a real collector, I am someone who wears old watches daily and just thinks they have more style than new ones.

At first glance, I'm skeptical of almost everything.

Thanks for taking to time to have a look. Could you elaborate bit? I am quite eager to learn.

In short, all parts of this ‘Watch’ are fake - except the movement. Stay away.
Elaborating on each part would demand a long reply. I suggest you study more examples more closely.

Start with looking at the detail on the caseback.

Thank you, at least that was very clear and I will stay away from it.
Will also try to find at least some of the obvious signs myself - after all, I do want it learn. I’m glad I asked after mainly being suspicious of the dial (which I assume is one of the problems, too).

Hi there, and welcome to the Forum!
You have chosen a very nice reference to go after (not the one that you posted....🤨).
But the reference is very hard to assess,
and there are lots and lots of weird and franken/fake ones out there to find.
You have done some research, so that a good start.
But I would check the sales posts here, and also search for the reference here on the Forum!
There is a lot of info here.

Good luck with your hunt, and do take your time!

Thanks a lot! Will keep researching and my eyes open. I have no rush and would like to buy a nice original one when the time (and the seller 😀) is right.

Hello everyone,
just wanted to say thank you again for saving my butt on that Ebay fake watch even though it was so obvious. I have found quite a few of the problems with it myself by now through comparing lots of photos. I guess the learning curve here was (and still is) steep. Also, the links to the recommended sellers were great.
Next time I’ll ask a question I will hopefully find a slightly more challenging or at least interesting one for you. 😁

We are all here to learn and that is always ongoing with no end. That is why pictures not links are wanted. Links disappear and pictures stay for others to learn as time passes.

Better to asked first on such a reference....and if all you get is obfuscation and diversion and lip from a seller, move on.
