When I was in grad school the only job that I could get was at a liquor store--that was considered skilled labor in Oxford, MS.

One Saturday night, two guys came in and asked me what would be the biggest bang for $20.

I sold them a pint of Jaegermeister, a half pint of Everclear, and a two Red Bulls. Told them to mix that all up and have a go at it...

I don't know what happened to those two poor blokes...they either had the time of their lives that night or woke up in a gutter or a jail cell.

This is a favorite of mine.

I am also a big fan of the Martell XO.

El Dorado 12 year old rum - $22 for a 750ml. Hands down this is the best thing under 25 bucks. If this was in the 50 plus range it would still be a bargain.

There are one or 2 exceptional Scotches under $25 like Auchentosion current base expression. Tobemoray has a base expression that is also sublime.

In Cognac I'd go Frapin VIP at $800 as it is much better then Louie Tre at $2600. The Louie is more complex but the Frapins just a bit better.

I was unaware that Oxford, Mississippi had any "blokes". Are you certain you weren't drinking the store inventory in Oxford, UK?

In college you could buy a bottle of Night Train (made famous by a Guns N' Roses song) and a bottle of Mad Dog 20/20 (possibly named for @Mad Dog ?) and get change back for a $5 bill. wine-bottle.png 20110801_1982714.jpg

We travel to St Thomas, USVI two or three times a year. When there we drink the local rum. The flavored rum is $9 a bottle. Best ever.

I will say, I did bring a few bottles home a few years back, and I will tell you, it tastes so much better when you are on the island.

Government of Saskatchewan Grain Alcohol...... huge proof in a 2 litre plastic bottle. Ultra bang for your buck. Or a good cleaning agent.

Oh the things we did when we were young.

At the end of a dirt road after dark.........

Long before Guns N Roses, I believe James Brown was known for his version of "Night Train" ;)

I suppose the OP should have clarified his intent - does "Best bang" mean "quality for money", or does it mean "how cheaply can you get blasted into orbit (nevermind the splashdown effect)"? I'm guessing the former, and I agree that Lagavulin is a great price from Costco, especially when they put it on sale - if scotch is your thing. Their Anjeo tequila is also excellent for $20.

In general though I feel that quality for money is typically found in aged rum - not so much now as it was 5-7 years ago, but still very good quality can be had for $30. I bought a few bottles of Zaya 12 year when it was still an aged store of Guatemalan rum, before they moved production. There is a ton of variation in rum styles as well, but the prices have never reached the stratospheric levels of top level Bourbon or Rye.
