Hi folks! I have been visiting this forum regurlarly to increase my knowledge on Omega watches bit by bit.
Especially the Omega vintage watches are interesting. So i have been searching the web to find me a nice piece.

At this moment i found myself a nice 1953 Seamaster 18KT Ref 2869. As for my concern the watch seems legit. The only thing thats rings a bel is the dial. As i look on the web i cannot find a second one with the same dial. There ar a few that look similar, but they have a date function.

Could you help me out and advise me? Is this a genuine piece, with a redial?

Thanks for your replies and advise!

Best regards,
Erwin Reuvekamp

Poor redial, over-polished case, and the crown is unoriginal.

Think these were made with the cal 500/501. Rotor bridge seems to have a different color then the rotor. The dial looks terrible (as said).

Think the caliber 500 is 17 jewels and the 501 is 19 jewels. Your rotor is saying 20 jewels. Hmmm. Not sure though...

Hmm. I think i have to let this piece of vintage go. What would be the estimated value for a watch in this condition? Again, it should be a 18kt case.

Gold price only with a couple of bucks on top. Collectors wont buy this.

Your right, people would do that i agree! The purpose of me collecting watches is to wear them years from now on and enjoying every moment of it when wearing. In this case i don't think i can enjoy some sort of frankenwatch. But i really appreciate your advise and help searching for the real deal!

Read read read and look and compare hundreds or thousends of dials. Then you know what to look for. In this case it's a very bad redial but sometimes the redials are very subtle. Good luck! And if in doubt, post here!

In order of education.... What is the "dead giveaway" that this is redial. What makes it that worse?

There are lots of tells but the very heavy nature of the printing is the first red flag. Also the S is too big, there is no Swiss or Swiss Made, the A should have a flat top text etc etc. It has a lot of give aways

Wow! That's a lot of tells. I think i have to educate myself in how to recognise a redial more easily. Again thanks for the advise. I called the person a few minutes ago that the deal is off.

I would say that for this dial there is no particular give away: the whole thing is bad. When you have seen several correct examples, you will recognize right away these poor redials.

Sorry if I intrude on this discussion, so do you think these watches with ref 2869sc are not original?

Cal. 501 also came in a 20 jewel version so that part is correct.

All the other points raised in the thread are still valid.
