I’m starting to wonder why I even have a phone number anymore

The biggest danger now is these f*ckers spoofing numbers, and well known web sites.

I had a text from "my bank", I checked my actual bank messages, nothing, so the concerned text was shit canned.

Another danger with mobile phones is porting without owners knowledge or consent. I'm not sure exactly how it works once the pricks have your "phone", but Ive seen a couple of reports where a ported number has resulted in substantial loss of money.

Some bona fide sites indicate, after I’ve logged in and entered my password, that they want to send a onetime 6 digit authentication code to my profile number or email.

I’m more than happy with this extra layer of security.

All the robo calls I get have "spoofed" numbers so I can't block it. Different number every time and usually local.
Rarely have a real person calling. Robots are taking over telemarketing jobs, too.

I had a recent (ongoing) experience with my (EX) home insurance company, only ever heard from them when a premium was due but their premium suddenly spiked 1k per year more so I rang then and cancelled the policy.
Since then I am getting several emails a day from them with advertising for their products and services, so as you say Jim never hit the unsubscribe button lol.

Insurance and other reputable, actual company, emails will have an unsubscribe function that works. The issue isn't the unsubscribe on legit emails. It's the fact your data has been sold/re-sold to their 3rd party partners a dozen times before you bother to unsubscribe.

yes I know that my issue was that as soon as I cancelled their service I started getting spammed by them though prior to cancellation I had no spam from them.

Something local (my bold emphasis)

mycar Tyre & Auto has paid a $1,047,000 penalty after it sent more than 1.7 million emails and texts that did not comply with Australia’s spam laws.
An Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) investigation found that between January and August 2022, mycar sent over 1.45 million texts and emails without a functioning unsubscribe facility.

Just think, if the fined every spamming arsehole $1 million…….the government would be flush, and we wouldn’t have to pay any tax!

One of my favorites is that I’m in law enforcement (which the caller definitely didn’t know) and I got a call from someone saying they are a Sgt for the agency I happen to work for and that I had a warrant for my arrest but I could take care of it by wiring money. Had fun with that one. Don’t remember the exact words of the conversation but I threw in some tears and a shaky voice and then just hung up

So here is sort of a trick. I moved but kept my number so I have an area code from a different state. Robocallers typically use numbers local to the area code of your phone. So.....all phone calls I now receive from where I used to live are scams, and all calls from area codes where I now live are legit.
