Hi guys, can I get your opinion on this Constellation (1954) cal. 354. IT'S ONE I can pickup locally through a well known seller and just been serviced by LewiswatchCo. I like the "salmon" dial and I don't think I have ever seen many, if any. 14223209 serial. Asking c.AUD2500 (about USD1750) what do you think?

ps. The papers you see are '67 service papers

I'm sure that the dial was originally gold and has aged/faded/morphed into the current color. Does the service come with a warranty? Since it is local to you, go in and try it on your wrist...see how it looks in the flesh, how the dial looks in various types of light. Fell how it winds and sets. I may be wrong, I'm not an expert on the variations of the Constellation from one generation to the next, but the crown appears to be incorrect. Most of all, what do you think of it? Is the price good for you? Will the seller give you a choice of straps? Does it meet all your hopes and expectations? Will it be hard to get it off your wrist. Buying a watch should be like falling in love.

Thank you. Yes I will arranged to go and try it on. Service comes with a warranty and it has been serviced by a well known and respected Omega specialist here downunder, so I have no qualms in that regard at all. I guess I was more curious about that dial. However, I think you may be correct on the fading of the dial, John.

* I'll make a general thread post in this forum as well and see what others think.

Hi john and Achim

It does not look like wear from the photo , looks like a reflection … to symmetrical for both lugs to be that close to each other .

Well the good news is great news. You are right, not wear, just reflection. The case is in great shape. And a wonderful surprise is that the dial is not stained or dirty, it is just light playing on the facets of the, what I called "honeycomb" pattern. Depending on which area of the dial is in shadow or indirect light, the color darkens compared to the rest of the dial. It almost looks like a two toned dial...except it isn't. The hands and markers are stunning pink gold. And the 36mm case is amazing...has great presence on the wrist. I have to say this watch is not a tarnished survivor, but a first class original example that, in person, needs no apologies.

Well I'm wrong. It is a two toned dial. And it is a fascinating dial...I am having as much trouble photographing it as the seller did. What I see with my naked eye is dramatically exaggerated by the camera. I'm using available natural light as well as artificial light...I'm going to have to play with it some more. But after looking closely and carefully through a 10x loupe, I am positive that this is a two tone dial...the outer edge, starting at the inner edge of the minute chapter is a almost gold-ish, slightly darker version of the cream center of the dial. It is too even to be random accumulated dirt from over the years. And under the loupe, you can see the fine boundry where it stops. My experience with other honeycomb dials is that they represent difficulties when they were originally made, how they wear over time, and certainly if being redialed. Here are some of my photo attempts.

And this may even be a very very old redial. The good news is that I don't wear the photos on my wrist, I wear the watch...on a very nice tan suede strap.

@johnireland that's a beauty! Congratulations!
One suggestion - in the last set of photos, it looks like the wrong glass was installed in the watch. Either with some unusual profile or with a steel ring inside. Maybe it's worth finding new glass to improve the look?
