I’m being naive: Can I get a turquoise 36mm 126000 from an authorized dealer for list price?

I've been on the waitlist for the green 36 since the launch. I was given a promise that I will get it as soon as they get it in stock but I have the impression that they did not realize back then that these will be such sought after models and thus gave me the promise... I have zero buying history with this ad so I guess they have simply overriden me because I havent heard anything from them so far and it has been over four months already.

I have a strong buying history with my local independent AD. UK
I have had a 20% deposit down for 3 months now on the 36 which I ordered for my Daughters graduation, latest update is "Summer".
My AD gets daily calls for the 36 and 41 Turqoise and stopped taking deposits in November. Rolex have been taken by surprise with the massive demand for the new OP range.

I don't really know how it works, so perhaps I should have written instead, "... too bad it doesn't seem to work the same way". The way it comes off is like an interview process to own one, but in fairness my assessment could also be total bullshit.
I mean the brand distribution sucks, and the way they don't have availability on product and allow their distributors to sell to gray or behind doors first, or even this thing of buy one to have the option to "buy" another sucks...so not defending this.

But on all the years and interaction with Rolex stores I have never seen or experienced anything like an "audition" to buy. They may look you up and down to see if you are a serious buyer, but they do that at Omega or any other store as well. But you can be a one armed thug on a speedo and, as long as you're carrying a wallet, they will sell you a Rolex....the problem is "What Rolex do they have to sell to you?"

Thanks a lot for a very entertaining, informative, and adventurous thread, @airansun ! Well done!
As a result, I started seeing turquoise everywhere, including around the house (see the picture).

Just a thought: you are sending pictures of your watches to ADs and mention number of Rolexes you have, trying to convince them that you are not a flipper. Now, think about who has lots of Rolexes... you are right, watch collectors and the very people you are trying to distance yourself from. Just a thought...

Good point, particularly if anyone at any of the dealers cared enough to pay attention. None of them asked any questions or made any statements to suggest that this might be a factor. I’ve never run into a group of salespeople who seemed as disinterested in a new customer as these people.

Honestly, for the vast majority of them, while they were completely polite, it felt like they just wanted me to go away and not bother them anymore.

Based on this experience, I don’t expect I’ll be getting a turquoise 126000 at all. So be it. I was interested but not lustful, so it’s not that hard to walk away.

And a depiction of my hopes of getting a turquoise 36mm Rolex:

I mean, it’s not like it’s one of those Snoopy Speedmasters. 😉

Hilarious but sad story. It is amazing that this tweak in color for the OP has caused it, too, to explode in popularity. Over 10K for a time-only steel watch? Incredible.

First two things you do when you find out your wife is pregnant.

You place your name on the Rolex and local Kindergarten waiting list.
Day care and Daytona are when you first meet your wife........

You do? I thought you forgot about Rolexes and settled for telling time with a Casio for the next 24 years or so until the kid finished college.

I’m almost tempted to send Number 5 a link to this thread. He might be amused enough to make a difference. On the other hand, I think he’s more likely to be put off or offended.

Think that’s a good idea? I think it’s too risky.

What have you got to lose?

So the kid gets one when he finishes college. 😁

I wonder is there actually a market for these watches for these ridiculous amounts? I mean are people really paying these prices? Or is it just dealers trying to artificially raise prices with even non existent watch sale announcements in chrono...

I mean I cant imagine anyone paying significantly above list for an oyster perpetual....

No idea of people are paying this but I thought the same about Subs and and Explorers 2 or 3 years ago.

Yeah. Although an oyster perpetual is not a submariner or even an explorer. Those two are iconic watches where as an oyster perpetual is simply not on the same level when it comes to status, historical significance etc....

I very much doubt people are paying these numbers. I have an impression that it is quite common in chrono these days that dealers list stock that they dont actually even posses in order to lift prices or whatever.

Any argument levied against the OP now could be levied against the Sub and Explorer several years ago. If anything the OP is just as sign it’s it’s the original, stripped down Rolex which was used on Everest, not the Explorer.

Yeah I get it. The quintessential rolex. I'm gonna buy the 36 mm green if my ad ever calls me...

There’s these readily available charmers:

What a bejeweled wonder. Makes my head spin (to say nothing of my stomach’s reaction).

So, given that a Lamborghini tractor has already featured here, I want to include this spectacular Case tractor, even though it ain’t turquoise.

I think it’s gorgeous. Makes me wish I had a farm.

Which isn’t easy to do. I’m a born and bred City boy.

Damn if I didn’t just find another Lamborghini tractor.

“Hate to take it into the fields and get it dirty again, Dad.”

A thoroughly entertaining read, I too would like the chance to buy an explorer 1 and probably a new sub at retail, but have very very little chance. So from a bank balance point of view this is a good thing but I fundamentally don’t like this secret club that you can only join with a handshake and spending ££££ on stuff that doesn’t interest me.

But I’m not sure you can blame the ADs, they are independent businesses, and anyone who runs a business knows that repeat customers get priority (and quite rightly), so if a grey dealer is spending £100k+ a year, an AD would want to keep this customer happy with a good supply of popular models.

Yes let’s blame Rolex for not making enough watches that people want, but equally they don’t want to flood a market place and de-value their brand and increase prices that come from it.

So in conclusion I don’t like Rolex’s limiting supply but I still want a new sub. So maybe I’m the idiot without the moral convictions to look elsewhere.
