Win, lose, or abstain: whoever has the highest bid will get the watch at the end of the day.

And, funnily enough, you can actually make great friends from people you beat and lose on auctions with.

If you're suggesting someone on the internet might selfishly bid on this watch knowing I already had dibs on it then I grieve for your faith in humanity.

Honestly, who hurt you dude?

Are you serious, wake up a smell the coffee snowflake. People you don't know will screw you as quick as you can hit the space bar.

No one hurt me, just a realist 😉

Seriously, y'all need Jesus.

@STANDY You God damned heathen.

Seriously though... I made a rookie error by plastering the details of the sale all over the walls here. I was just having fun after that was pointed out to me. Nothing in my last couple of replies was meant in earnest.

I don't think Ernest, or Jesus, will be contesting you for that watch.... but a lot of other lurkers might.

Oh, nice, the watch is in Dublin... Good thing I will have 9 hours layover, so I could pick it up and catch up my next flight).
To be serious, it will go way above €800, even without you posting it here.You'll find another one, don't worry about it.

I believe this is a fallacy many of us face. I know I certainly do.

When we don't have a lot of money, we crave for luxury at a low price.

When we do have a lot of money, we eschew luxury unless we derive pleasure from it.

Replace luxury with "watch everyone knows and wants" and you get the idea.

Take your time and be patient. Measure the watch up against your budget. Is it absolutely necessary to get it now?

Indeed it did. I'll be flipping it soon, after I clean up the bracelet. Let me know if you're interested. I'm only looking for a small profit.

It went cheap then…

I would easily have paid that…if I did not already have a better one

Despite the size, they wear very well on the wrist

I agree. That is north of €2,300. And that doesn't include a service cost - which going by the dirt on the bracelet, it needs. You've sucked the value out of the exchange on a re-sale @wsfarrell - good luck to you.

I entirely disagree …€2300 is fractionally over £2000

For an automatic Rolex from 42 years ago + original 78350 bracelet, in ‘Fine’ condition…that’s still a bargain

Bracelet, ( ultrasonically cleaned & tightened ), alone is worth €600…Quite how you imagined the whole watch would go for €600 is beyond me ?

I am also not quite sure how you equate a mildly filthy bracelet, …with the whole watch requiring an immediate service ?

@ICONO ,

I am going to value your experience over mine on this issue - I am obviously out of my depth. However I am fascinated by the processes at play here, so if you'll forgive me I'll risk embarrassing myself further and explain my thinking.

The price does seem excessive. And the reason I say this is because the buyer's stated intention to re-sell the piece - which it is safe to assume will drive the price up again. I didn't go to the auction in the end as I realized I had badly under-estimated what the watch would go for, and I didn't help matters by advertising it here. Had I gone and won the watch - I would have had to factor the time spent finding the watch and the time & difficulty I would have had selling it into the resale price. I have no seller's profile on Ebay, no network of enthusiasts, no 200 posts etc - so I'm guessing 12 or so working hours with email and what-have-you back and forth with multiple interested parties. Granted I would enjoy the process, but when talking business I don't work for free.

With regard to the bracelet - there is no such thing as 'mildly filthy' imho, it is a bit like saying 'mildly pregnant'. Either the wearer was a mechanic, or that watch hasn't been looked at by a professional in years. So to me, when balancing probabilities, a service would be the safe bet.

So lets say I'd won the watch, I am thinking €2300 +€300 for time spend (a very modest €25 an hour considering were talking about a luxury brand), and then whether I do it, or the buyer does it, €300 for a service - bringing the total to near €3,000 w/ shipping and insurance.

Would we still be describing a 'bargain'?

Sorry to @wsfarrell here for talking down the value of a resale - but he did seem to gloat a bit in my thread🤪
