I was unclear as to which watch this was. It appears to be a 2998-1 however the dial is incorrect. View attachment 795984

That was the only picture supplied by the auction house. It may in fact be a 2998-2 or -3.

Did 2998-3 retain the aero hands?

Shouldn't the hour hand have a triangle shaped lume?

I understand that some of those had a "narrow lume" version which were still original but I can't seem to distinguish them from the service narrow lume hands.

To me, it is almost a certainty that the dial is a replacement one. The original 2998-dials have long (lumed) hour indices, rather than the short ones on the dial of this particular watch. The T-marks are another telltale for a replacement dial on a 2998.

Hard to assess which version it is exactly based on one picture and knowing the dial is not the original one.

Just to make it easier to view this thread... Here's the picture attached by the OP.

Umm Professional text is a pretty big clue it’s been replaced...

Yep, another one. Hiding in plain sight. Doesn't change my conclusion though. ;) It's a service dial on a 2998 of which we only have one picture, making it nearly impossible to pinpoint the exact version.

Hammered for €16,000 + 21% out of Portugal. Halfway decent Base 1000 bezel, I wonder what it would have gone for without the gash? I also like to see the little import halmark on the lug(at first I always think it is a smudge or reflection in photos) giving it a little more provenance.

    Anyone here snag it?

    EDIT:
For those curious about the import hallmark see more info @ The "Portugal Dent" https://omegaforums.net/threads/lugs-with-portugal-dent.13003/
