I've got my youngest daughter's Christening coming up and also about to turn 40 so thought I'd treat myself to a new watch. Looking at my current collection they are all fairly sporty chronographs. Breitling Avenger, Rolex Daytona, Audermars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore, Omega Grey Side and a Tudor Grantour. Think it's time to smarten my collection up with a nice dress / dressier watch.

I've fairly small wrists (7.25") but like my watches to wear fairly big so would want the watch to be 40mm +. Not a massive fan of yellow gold. I don't want to purchase a brand that I already own. Not interested in vintage so would be new. Budget top end is around the £10000.00 mark, can push it a bit but not too far.

Any recommendations? With or without pictures would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

    Ian

    It's a Malte Grande Classique.

You should look at AP's Jules Audemars too.

I admire your creativity in using your daughter's christening as an excuse to buy a new watch, if you can get her converted to Judaism before she's a teenager you could buy a Bat Mitzvah watch as well to celebrate her turning 13.

I'd seriously never heard of the religious occasion excuse for watch buying before this thread but it should definitely become a thing.

I'd much rather an Easter Patek than an egg.

People from Yorkshire are known to be as tight with their money as the Jewish so converting doesn't seem too far a stretch, especially if I can get another watch out of it ;)

Yes Dennis did...but OP has said he isn't a fan of yellow gold, wants a 40mm+ watch and is not interested in vintage.

IWC Makes nice watches, never accused of being "small" either....Portuguese or Portifino etc. No pics because they have so many variations of case, functions, face, hands, straps, etc. I love em. Ok, here's just one heehee, a Portuguese 5001-07.

    Hey Ian,

Er, 7.25" wrists aren't really 'small' you know... ;) And a GBP10k budget? Wheeeee, here we go!

    1. JLC.
    a. Reversos - the Grande Ultra Thin Duo, or the Duoface Blue. Or the TTR1931. Or the TTR 1948. All of these are at least 27x46mm and wear like a 40-41mm watch. I really like Reversos as they're lovely dress watches, but they're worth trying on first as they wear differently from others.
    b. The new meteorite dial Master Calendar. The RG version is killer
    Both are within your budget.

    2. VC
    a. The Malte Grande Classique above is lovely, but the 36mm case may be too small for you.
    b. alternatives - Patrimony Traditionelle. 38mm but wears like a 39-40mm watch. Bewitching in the metal! Can be found pre-owned just about within your budget.

    3. Moser & cie.
They have beautiful 'fume' dials, in case sizes of 39-40mm. The Venturer can be seen here, while the Endeavour is here. Definitely within budget, and having seen one, the fume dial is absolutely killer in the metal. Plus you'd have an indie watch !

    4. Stretch
With a bit more of a stretch to GBP12k, there'd be options (pre-owned) of the 40mm Lange 1815 (ahhh), Patek's 38mm sector dial Calatrava (which wears like a 39mm), or the VC Patrimony Contemporaire (40mm)

I hope this helped. It certainly was fun for me listing the dress watches I really like (but can't buy!)

Then how 'bout a simple vintage SS Seamaster with coffin-box markers on a gator strap. It dress-up real well :)

    @NT931 thanks for the suggestions

JLC Reverso, nice but a bit too formal for me. Meteorite, already had my eye on the St St model
VC, Malte Grande Classique. I could look at that dial all day. Need to try and track one down.
Moser & Cie, never even heard of this brand before and have to agree the fume / rose gold dial looks great
Lange, was eyeing one up on Watchfinder but it has just recently sold. Plus I wouldn't want to wear it as I'd be looking at the case back all the time

Sorry guys, but I am a fan of Harry Enfield and it might even be more appropriate in this thread than in the previous one.....
Afraid this topic is sooo out of my league....

You'd be surprised! Granted the Grande Reverso UT Duo and the 1948 are more formal, but the TTR1931 is remarkably versatile and goes well with jeans, as do other Reversos. It's all in the strap - a black strap goes with formal wear, while a brown one is for the weekends.
