Hi All, Normally I would just report this myself - never heard of an Omega 961 movement but thought I would put this to the experts and confirm it's fake so we can then collaboratively report it: http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/OMEGA-SW...61527018733?pt=AU_Watches&hash=item3ce4399cedPurchases made through these links may earn this site a commission from the eBay Partner Network
Interesting. Omega does list a caliber 961 on their caliber list under " old caliber" category 3. The 41XXX would date it to around 1978. I have no idea what type of watch they were used in though.
AJTT gives the 961 as being based on the Unitas UT 6497 and they produced 107 of them in 1979. There are a number of differences between the eBay movement and the drawing in AJTT. The barrel bridge with the 961 marking, does look correct but the balance cock is a different shape and the individual wheel cocks are a single bridge in the drawing. I can't comment on the case and dial.
Found several other brand versions containing the UT 6497 with similar dial layout via Google. Nothing Omega though.
Yes, it's based on the UT 6497. The 961 has the sub-seconds and the 960 version deletes the seconds, so just hours and minutes. Note that many places that are claiming a UT 6497 inside are actually using the modern ETA version. The old Unitas versions are no where near as common as the ETA versions are, and yes there are some differences. I use the ETA versions in many of the watch I make and sell. Note that Omega now uses the modern ETA 6498-2 in some of their watches - someone here bought one not that long ago but found it too big. They now call it a Cal. 2201. Cheers, Al
Oh, and yes the case, dial and hands are made by a company in Switzerland I used to deal with many years ago - the watch as a whole is fake for sure.
More info in this link. Maybe the same goes for the watch on offer...it had the same price of 799 usd. http://www.pmwf.com/Phorum/read.php?10,410585,410585,printview
A brand called Altanus. New "vintage style" pilot watch with UT 6497 movement inside. This model was from around 2007 I think. Not my watch, but as mentioned I found the picture via Google as an example of UT 6497 watches.
