I've been looking for a Datejust and was going to go modern 41mm, but then this popped up. It all looks correct to me but I am not good at dials, so wanted your thoughts on that. It looks original to me and not a redial. The other concern is polish. Bezel looks good. The lugs look ok but in one pic the pin seems to be awfully close to sticking out. Also, the 12xxxxx serial number dates it to 1959ish but the casebook is 1966.

Appreciate any thoughts. Price is $4,800. I would like to get it for $4,000.

    Thanks,

    Corn

I tell you what...give me a week or two and I'll find you a nice DJ and sell it to you for $3,500.

I'll clear $1,000+ profit and you'll save $500...a win win.

Or you could find one on your own and save a ton.

This isn't a full set glossy gilt dial...it is a run of the mill matte DJ...literally millions of them out there. Dealers don't take these because they are impossible to move.

that is a super mint dial though....but watchknut is about right. I would pay 3-3.5k MAX, closer to 3k

I think @Drawarms is right, $3k is more in line.

At the end of the day it is a plain DJ...

As the 'Boys' say……it is a bog standard DJ…albeit a nice one with a white gold bezel

$ 3,000 is absolutely on the nose……Incidentally for that money, you could find a good Turn-O-Graph DJ ………if you poke about the undergrowth for a while

    Good luck !

    But they say it's rare!

    "Hey Tom!
Thanks for your inquiry! The matte dial DJs are actually quite hard to come by and hard for us to source especialy in the condition that we buy and curate for inventory.
Unfortunately that is below our cost on this specific piece so we will need to respectfully decline your offer. Please feel free to keep us in the loop if you have any questions or if we may be of any additional assistance!"

The dial is later than mid 60's. So serial number on case and dial are from different eras.
    I would pass.

They source nice watches, and are good people.

That being said, they seem to cater to the Hodinkee/Red Bar Crew crowd...and I just made a sweeping generalization...meaning that their clientele will pay a premium to swipe a credit card and overnight...there is no thrill of the hunt.

If you really want a vintage DJ, they are somewhat easy to source...just take your time and troll the forums and ebay.

I recently passed on a steel, sigma sunburst gilt dialed datejust that I really liked but didn't have the extra funds for 2500 eur. The more common ones should go for $2500 USD or even less if you're patient

Couldn't tell you what its worth, or if its real, etc... but it is pretty. Sounds like the more knowledgeable of the group have thoughts on pricing.

As mentioned by others $4800 is way too much, especially without box & papers. So i would keep on searching.

Nice watch but asking price is much too high in regards to the market value.

While matte dials may not show up as often as some of the other dials it's not that highly sought after.

It took 1505 views and a couple of months before someone took this one off my hands for $3100

1971 - Minimally polished, recent (and first) RSC service. Full immaculate Bracelet with no stretch and 22 links.

    I'm not sure I've seen a "T SWISS MADE T" dial before...

that dial is not original to the watch. i think this is a later service dial. i have a '72 Datejust with a black matte dial. it is difficult to see in these pictures but the text should be silver and most (all?) of these earlier black matte DJ had little specks of red paint in the black. I have had a service dial from either the late 70s or early 80s and it looked nearly identical to this.

I was actually questioning if it might be refinished; I've never seen that specific tritium designation with "swiss made".

the T SWISS MADE T dials do exist for these matte dials. I am not a DJ expert but I have seen plenty of these, particularly 1603s, with these dials. I do love these matte tritium dials, but I agree with everyone else, that this is too expensive. one of the issues is that if you ever decide to flip/sell, no one will offer you more than $1800-2000 (dealers, maybe) or $2500 (on forums, ebay) for these...even if the watch is completely correct. so unless you are really ready to love it and plan to not sell, then you are going to have to be ready to eat the cost. and don't get me wrong, DJs are wonderful, great - but there are a LOT of them out there. wouldn't go crazy. be patient, you can find these listed for ~3000-3500 and bargain down from there.
