I really don’t like the word ‘Professional’...

...on the dials of my Speedmasters.

One of my biggest criticisms of the faces of Rolex dials is how wordy they are. Some of them have six or more lines of bragging.

    Please. ::rant:

    Who
    are they telling?

    You
bought the watch, so you know. Well, maybe you need to read it every day, but I don’t.

Friends, family and lookyloos? Very few people ever ask to see a watch you’re wearing close up, so it’s not for that audience either. Besides, you can tell them yourself, if they ask to examine it.

Buyers are the audience, I think. People looking in the shop cases or on eBay. It’s to sell the thing.

So, it’s advertising. Permanently painted onto the faces, defacing the faces, of your favorite watches.

The AML and the words Omega Speedmaster are all you need to know, I’d prefer to think. A simple label.

Anyway, doing it that way makes for what I think is a much more elegant dial. ::love::

So, please give me shit, cause I’m obviously asking for it. (You here—> :whipped: <—me here.)

It’s a Friday afternoon here, so this thread is a perfect weekender. A squirrel, I’m sure must be to blame. ::stirthepot::

It's marketing. It could be a lot worse — and if anything, it makes it easy to distinguish between straight and lyre lugged Omegas.

If it really bothers you that much you can always scratch it off ::bleh::

Park the Chrono at 12 and keep the watch at 2 minutes past 11. There!... you can hardly see it now. 20180901_110143-1.jpg

What about all those numbers on the bezel? Totally superfluous.

My Avatar watch is also a bit challenging
Under the word „Cosmonaute“ there is also a „T“ printed because the lume on Hands is Tritium and dial has radium hour markers. But I love this inscription ::love::

Part of the reason I bought a FOIS. Classic and understated on the dial and everywhere else.

The word Professional doesn’t really bother me (though the definition of the word is a bit muddled - is it of or relating to a particular profession?!?). As noted above, there is always the option of a FOIS or pre-moon. At least it’s not like one of those Navitimers, where there’s just too much going on for me.

Re professional: It’s relating to the changes they made in the watch to make it more fit for purpose. Namely the asymmetric case which protected the pushers from getting caught on things and pulled off. It’s also about the same time they moved to an upgraded case in regards to waterproofing the watch.

As for Navitimers there is a beauty in the amount of info and what you can do with it. It’s a true tool watch and built to be used as a very functional tool for a pilot. Sure it’s a bit busy, but many see a beauty in its design.

I believe professional means for the professionals of the trade the watch was designed for. Seamaster equals typical dives where professional means that professional divers. I for one love the 4 lines of text.

You just got a like from myself.
    No shit :D

Well, my dear. It's a strategy decided by other, some love it, some like me and you don't like it. Peace.

Fair enough, although with some of the Navitimers it’s difficult to even read the time, which is the most basic function of a wristwatch. That’s one of the beauties of the Moonwatch, it’s a classically simple design that is highly legible.

Also, thanks, I do understand why the term Professional came about; but if anyone asks me I tell them that it refers to the profession of being an astronaut

I had a chronograph for a short period of time and wasn't wearing it because I found the dial too busy.

A watch should tell the time, easily and quickly with no superfluous crap to distract.

It's why I love my old railway watches, the time, plain, clear and simple. Just the makers name in small print to let you know who to thank.

I think Omega blew the new Tresor by fitting too busy a dial with all the extra advertising and a date window... too much.

"Officially certified co-axial chronometers" need not apply.
