i visit clients in the jail a lot. cell phones are not permitted in the jail, even visiting. its a misdemeanor to bring a cell phone.

i need to keep track of the time. therefore i need a watch.

basically that means i can spend pretty much any amount, right?

^^ a gold case, diver's watch w/chronograph functions, on a NATO strap, bearing the Italian flag colors - I must say it's an interesting choice. ;)

I couldn’t find a Mexican NATO, so Italian (Mafia?) had to do. Gotta keep the bling spirits up of ones Gangsta-rap clients.

It all depends on who your clients are but there is a "code" to wristwatches in a lot of professions.

If you're court appointed, I'd suggest any of the steel Seikos. Starting from $100, you're not going to be upset if it's slammed against an interview room wall and they are perfectly reliable with some good looking designs.

If your clients are, shall we say, a few steps further up the income ladder then they're likely to take note of the watch you wear. In that situation, wearing no watch is probably more forgivable than wearing the wrong one. Don't go for homages - the client will take an instant dislike and distrust. Something that would suit all situations would be a vintage three hander. You can go with anything from an Omega Seamaster to a Vacheron or a Patek.

Find one you like and post photos. Between us, the collective here will tell you everything you need to know about your choices.

In light of all the sage advice above, the obvious solution IMHO would be a vintage Omega Ploprof:

    - It will handle interview room wall slammings like a champ.
    - It will get a nod from ‘upper tier’ clients (and is not a homage) who know their watches
    - in the worst situations it can be used as a weapon in self defense ... just point and slam where you need to inflict pain ... there is no doubt that this watch will come out on top
    - and the biggest plus : despite all that it’s a great looking comfortable to wear piece that tells the time

I knew a business lawyer working for big multinational companies and he made a point to wear nothing but a dark plastic Swatch.

And in this particular instance I think it’s the best solution by far. It’s cheap, sturdy, keeps perfect time- and completely unobtrusive.
Anything else except Seiko will signal to the client that while they’re sitting in jail, you care more about watches than about their case and I think THAT creates a potential for mistrust.

If someone’s in jail they must focus on their own situation and helping you do your job, not be distracted by their lawyer’s watch.

(Ploprof was a joke I suppose?)

Prison is the last place I'd wear any watch that cost more than £20.

Do what they used to do in New York in rhe old days, carry a « muggers’ wallet » - a certain wallet with a certain amount of cash that’ll get a mugger happy and that the one you hand out when people point a gun at you.

My holiday watch is a 30 euro Casio. Same battery for the last 5 years. Altitude (which is remarkably accurate) and temperature.

It’s because you have never been in one. I work in a prison and feel less safe walking to my car than at work.

Clients beating up their lawyers in the visit room is just TV stuff.

EDIT: grammar and spelling (must have been drunk!)
