Hello all, this is my first thread in the vintage Omega section. I was just a lurker but recently a nice Omega Speedmaster crossed my way. I liked the look, as it is a true vintage piece with rich patina. To be honest I don't know much about it, but I think it's a quite early example. The caseback shows a watchmaker sign from 1968, so I think some parts have already been changed (hands?!). I have not yet found an identical watch with all same specs. It runs and keeps good time, but now that I wear it, I want to know more about it. So please give me your opinion about it and tell me what I really have. You can be honest, I do like the Speedy anyway The movement number starts with 17: Thanks you for your opinion and so far I think 2014 started well for me. But I'm always open to learn
Nice dial. Interesting that it has the Pulsations bezel too. I'm not much of a Speedmaster fanatic, but I think that a 2998 should have alpha style hands so the white ones on your watch now are probably replacements.
looks very, very nice. Hands are replacements, possibly bezel too but I don't know enough about original pulsations bezels. the dial is spectacular. i would keep my eyes open for some origional hands, but you will need to be patient. There are lots of new ones about, and seamaster ones too being sold as correct. None of them are, for me at least. well done. A great find.
Yes that's what I think, too. I think they were already replaced in the 60s, because of the early chrono seconds hand.
Pulsations bezel is readily available even today. I don't think it is original to the watch - the base 1000 bezel that the watch originally came with is virtually impossible to locate in good shape (or in any shape).
A great start to 2014 indeed! I'm not one of the tropical dial lovers (yet ) but as those go, this one looks fantastic. Bezel and hands can be replaced with a sadistic combination of time and money. Have patience! Fortunately the watch looks great even with white hands and pulse tachy. How's the back engraving? I've been looking at cal.321 Speedy's lately. I think it is the New Year's Resolution for 96% of the watch collecting world to obtain the same. There are few out there, and prices are beginning to resemble phone numbers even (especially?) pre-moon cal. 861's! Congrats on landing a great one!
Awesome watch! The s/n is correct for a 2998-2. I don't know when they started with the pulsations bezel, but it looks to be of similar age as the hands. They still sell it today. Finding the correct hands and bezel for that watch will be challenging but can be done. Meanwhile you have a great looking piece. Welcome to club pulsations. LOL
While there are pulsation bezels available today, the do not look like the OP watch. The fonts are different. So I believe the OP watch is probably an early example of a modified watch, contemporary and therefore I would be happy to keep this as is. No need to change it, as it may well have spent almost all of its life in this specification.
I think the pulsation and other various non-tachymeter bezels start showing up around the production of the 105.003.
Thanks for all your opinions and your kind words. Very much appreciated... One thing about the hands still puzzles me. I also think they have been changed. But how does the correct configuration look like? M/H, subregisters and chrono seconds hand. Have a nice sunday!
This is another possible set up for 2998-2 (courtesy of Omega museum) Note: the bezel is new replacement
In an earlier post someone stated that my watch needs the base 1000 bezel but neither your nor the museum watch have them. So I think standard early bezel is also okay, right?
I did quite a bit of research and in the end came to the conclusion that both the base1000 and Dot over 90 are correct for 2998-2. Cheers
