The best are "the Swans of Authenticity", "going Ashley" on an eBay bid, and "Ninjas of Disappointment" in reference to the Australian Postal Service was pretty damn funny too. We've thrown a few against the wall that didn't stick either, like calling the Naiad waterproofing system the "Betamax Crown". One or two were brought here from other forums, like "hobsession" - combining 'hobby' and 'obsession' which is probably a more accurate term given the indigenous life here. I gotta be forgetting a few. Have we done any others? Come to think of it, has this thread been done before? You know what they say about getting old - the 3 things to go are memory........ and I forget the other 2.
Forgot about that one - it was a seller claiming "NO RESERVE!" in his description, but a high opening bid, right?
Respectable Member MyVintageOmega It is found all members of this forum are indeed respectable. If all members of this lovely earth of ours are respectable too, we will not have wars and famines in this world. Wishful thinking, though. Thank-you.
Beg to differ, "Mumbai Special" refers to a watch redialed in one of the characteristic pastel Easter Egg shades favored by obviously colorblind Mumbai redialers - that's what special about Mumbai. Rusty movement as a result of tropical climate is a secondary feature. Your description simply corresponds to a franken - available worldwide.
Didn't Dennis coin one about all the places that end with Stan, something to do with Borat and his sister?
This is a little like "Grail" . It can have a similar connotation but slightly different definition to different folks. The important thing is we all know one when we see it; that is: I know what Gator means when he says it and I know what Lou means when he uses the term. That is except for Dennis, sometimes I just don't know what he's talkin' about, even though I am familiar with a lot of the basic Joisey, having grown-up with Brooklynese as a second language.
I think "WIS Muggle" should go into the books. to paraphrase Wikipedia "a muggle is a person who lacks any sort of WIS ability and was not born into the WIS world. Muggles also do not have any WIS blood." Bone up on it here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muggle
I called those little former Soviet provinces names like Thievestan and Carjackistan. Thievestan, while more accurate, is not as close to a real name of one of those provinces as Carjackistan (Kazakhstan) is. Plus, Scamistan or Cannibalistan is probably a better description of the watch sellers on eBay who hail from that region. How about "There is no 'I' in FAKE."?
Not sure I agree with having Harry Potter references. I recall seeing a lot of witches, but not a lot of watches....
