When you are broke, divorced or banned from vintage watch shops...in all seriousness, I got up to 100 watches, then decided to refocus my collection on quality and I’ve aiming for “only” 30 of the best..;)

Personally I don't like to have more than 6, I like to actually wear my watches.

I'm going to stick with "one never knows".

Lately I have tried to follow a "one-in, one-out" rule - and it works more or less. That said, the "only one watch from one brand" is tricky since there are many iconic watches without having a Speedmaster...

I'm at about 30 now... more and they won't all get enough running time to keep them healthy unless I'm going to start winding them in the cases.

After 3 years of collecting vintage, and having too many to appreciate each one, I've started 'binge' buying. I'll sell a few, think I've done well for myself, and then I'll buy twice as many as I sold! ::facepalm2::

In other words, I'm afraid I don't know the answer to your question...:D

When your spouse says it's either the watches or her. I'll miss her.

when you start pulling the same watches out of the drawer to wear and you know there's a whole lot more just laying there.

    that's normally when you know.

If you're not a "collector" that is.

When the watch boxes are full, then it's enough.........until you get another watch box that is.

Typically your hands fall off.... That's how we all know. That or your wife sits you down for a chat..... Or your accountant starts asking you to be pragmatic......

It's really quite simple. There's an algorithm for collecting almost anything.

The ideal collection is n+1 where n is the size of your current collection.

    Clear?

...and there is another even more important algorithm you use when the spouse / your friends ask you the following question :

Q : "How many watches do you have?"
    A : Log10(n)

(So maybe the best answer to the OPs questions is '...when Log10(n) is more than the number of limbs one has.')

    Sorry...shoulda' told u :)

    Log10(10 watches) = 1 watch
    Log10(100 watches) = 2 watches
    Log10(1000 watches) = 3 watches
    Log10(10000 watches) = 4 watches

...and so on ;) (Basically the number of '0's in your watch collection)...

You only truly know its enough once your watches have had enough with you.
