How do you store watches?

Very interesting point of view, @Tony C. , thanks for taking time.

I think we feel a bit distant from all the things happening around Switzerland and haven't been warned on that matter so far. Also there are still banks that will suffer less from a systemic crisis here and I believe the situation must really go wrong for the banks to empty their customers' safes to "participate" to their sauvetage.

But you point of view is really precious to me and makes me think of maybe share the value among different safes in time. Simply to avoid a single point of failure. One always feels better safe than sorry...

"Now, with regardto safe deposit boxes, they are typically insured, but only for a limited amount."

Banks in the USA typically provide NO INSURANCE for contents of safe deposit boxes.

No doubt that most Swiss banks are relatively safe. But the central point is that banks were, in general, quite safe in most places around the world for many decades, as they were largely managed in a traditional, conservative manner. Times have changed, though, and many banks now either speculate directly in various markets, or are exposed to other banks that do. This is highly destabilizing, and can lead to individual and/or systemic failures.

Central banks do support individual banks, but that does not necessarily make them safe.

The world is in uncharted economic territory, and taking the safety of banks for granted could well prove to be a mistake.

I once considered safety deposit boxes, until my insurer told me that they will NOT insure property in SDBs, and my bank told me stuff in SDBs are NOT insured. So no protection at all IF stuff gets stolen.

I'm sure in other banks, if they extend any insurance benefits, it must be to a certain amount only. That's why they don't ask you to disclose the value of goods kept inside SDB with them.

To be honest, I only have a rough idea. I've added two more in the last few weeks. I'd guess maybe a little over 100 or so. I once met a guy (now deceased), who had 875 watches..........................all by the early American watch company, Aurora! But he collected many other makes as well. My collection is tiny by comparison.

I had to store all of my watches in a safety deposit box for most of the summer due to an insecure living situation - I just wrapped them all in bubble wrap as the bank was climate-controlled, just about as well as my apartment is. You should be fine if you can't seal them up.

Just check the bank SDV is climate controlled on Sundays.

I had a friend who went to get his "Pension Fund" GMT out from HSBC in HK and the dial was ruined. He discovered that they turn the Aircon off Saturday lunchtime until monday morning. So once a week it was baked. For 20 years.

Sounds like this device is a good investment for anyone using a SDB long term. Measure the temp and humidity in your box over a period of time. Weeks, months. No surprises.

Relative Humidity Meter PCE-HT 71N
Order no.: PCE-HT 71N
Price US$ 61.00

@watchdaddy1

Great job! I really like that layout.
Thanks Tony, it was my best friends gun case @ 1 time. I just flipped the egg crate looking foam over to give me a nice straight line for the crowns to line up & went to work w/ an exacto blade. & I have ZERO patience BTW.... NONE
