If it should be that I grow frail and weak
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this — the last battle — can't be won.

You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.

We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.

Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end
And hold me firm and speak to me
Until my eyes no longer see.

I know in time you will agree
It is a kindness you do to me.
Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.

Don't grieve that it must be you
    Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close — we two — these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

No east way to do it but presumably a decision has been made that it is better for the dog due to health or other reasons. It is better for you to suffer the sadness of the loss than for the dog to suffer the pain of health issues, meds, hospital visits, etc.

The grief and the pain go on for quite a long time and are exhausting. They will not be pushed away and the best way to deal with them is to acknowledge them and let them have their moment. You will probably feel guilty, no way around that no matter what you tell yourself. You are in for a rough time, but it won't last forever.

    I weep.

I have grieved harder over the loss of a good dog than over any human.

I had more trouble with my dog than I did when I ordered my mother to go to rest.
I'm proud to have been there for the both of them.

I've got a letter from a friend that gave me comfort, I hope I can find it.
If not, it talked of what you gave, of what was expected and of peace.

    Peace to you.

I am more upset over this than the death of my Dad. And I had to give the go ahead to pull the plug on him. Crazy. LOL

I'm so sorry! Our Boston (Pepper) just turned 10 today. I'm so not looking forward to that time of grief. Just enjoy the little bit of time left and remember the good times. This is a tough one.

My heart goes out to you and your family! I can’t imagine what that day will be like, but my lab is 13ish now, and I will be faced with the same decision.

What I can say is that I rescued Chloe 10 years ago and, and she’s changed my life, and me hers! I expect I will focus on the knowledge that we’ve had a great 10 years, and nothing can take that away!

    I am so sorry

I have never owned a Dog……but plenty of cats…some of whom have died in my arms

Afterwards you will naturally grieve…but you will also remember the great memories, created by that relationship

Stay strong, for the rest of the Family…being an Adult sometimes means difficult painful decisions, that are nevertheless, the right decisions

Very best wishes, & good luck

This may sound wrong.....but giving a new puppy a chance at the spot that your loved one held in your heart, helped us.

Nothing I can say, it’s devastating. Some people don’t understand how this is, but a dog to me is a cherished family member.

I have empathy for your situation. We put one of our Boston’s down 5 yrs ago and I still get sad thinking about that good boy.

Sorry to hear, I lost my pooch a few years ago. He was 14 and was still energetic when I got word he had cancer. My wife and I decided to put him down a week later at the vet office. I bought him a Five Guys burger, after he inhaled he burger, took him for a nice walk and then put him down in the lawn of my vet's office.

Nothing prepares you for that moment, we took lots of pictures, my wife and I were both at his side. I still remember the afternoon vividly but also brings me peace of mind that he went without much suffering.

Best of luck to you and your family.

We’ve had to put five dogs down, over the last 35 years. The way I handle it is to let my wife attend to it. When we lost the first one, it hit me hard. But with each of the next four, it became easier. Still miss each and every one of them, but life goes on.
