I got this 2002 3572.50 recently (it's my first speedmaster). I am still within the return period and I am wondering about the quality (or lack of thereof) of case polishing. Even to my completely untrained eye the imperfections are fairly obvious, but I was wondering how bad it was compared to the 'average' polished speedy? Would you say it's 'over - polished'? Would you keep it or return it? (it was not the cheapest 3572.50 around) Your advice is much appreciated!
Well... I'm completely new to this but I was under impression the polished surfaces are supposed to be flat and they look a bit convex to me, especially towards the outer edges. In some areas, the outer edge is a bit rounded and the polished area seems to extend over the edge, invading onto an area which should be brushed. The outer brushed areas on each of the lugs have slightly different shape. That said, I might be completely misguided - hence the post...
It's certainly seen a polish or two, but I don't think it's that bad. However, unpolished examples from this timeframe are easily available. I'd be looking for unpolished full sets for this reference. You shouldn't have trouble finding one.
That would be an unacceptable level of polishing for me. The ends of the lugs are particularly bad, on all sides.
It could give watches in this thread run for their money https://omegaforums.net/threads/overpolished-pos-of-the-week.41194/
What you could do, is to take your omega speedy to an omega AD and ask to see a moonwatch. Take it side by and side and compare. (gotta be thick skin abit though) From there, you can decide if its acceptable or not.
Too much for my taste. It shouldn’t be that difficult to find an unpolished example from that time period.
It’s not the worst I have seen, but if it bothers you then return it. No reason to tolerate expensive tool watches you don’t love if you don’t have to. I’d have passed.
Many thanks for your opinions! I've decided to return it and try a 3592.50 which was my alternative option (a bit more expensive but hopefully less polished).
