after swearing that I'm taking a break, I had to inquire on this. I was shocked/not shocked at the ask. This is a stunner! Too rich for my blood.
Vintage UG chrono values are in an obvious bubble at present. If you buy at these levels and expect to profit as a result, you're likely to be disappointed.
You're also paying for the extra added value that is a product sold by Hodinkee (they're a little overrated imo... it's the people that made it as big as it is at the moment, and for nothing special...).
This one has incorrect and mistmatched subdial hands. That alone makes it a less than pristine example not worthy of the asking price.
Wow ! Thanks, the design is indeed uncommon but not very elegant imo, too heavy. Anyway it looks like the earlier chronos prices are sucked-up by the Nina Rindt bubble... I like it, it's good for my collection
Did not notice the subdials. The rest of it is still beautiful but bubble money. Wonder why Hodinkee did not flag
Important to appreciate this is a 33-34mm case - it wears small, which mitigates the 'beefy' effect of the design. The steel chrono prices have been sucked up...
15k it's really a crazy price for that watch (and I love medico-compax: I have two in my collection). That price would be a lot also for a 37mm round pushers chronograph, but for a 33 square pushers (even with an unusual case) it's insane.
Well, you see, there's this young buck in the UG marketing department, and not too long ago he made a presentation arguing that, as many large corporations buy back their own stock in order to support their share prices, why not do something similar in the world of watches? When he was informed that new watches depreciate too rapidly for such a scheme to work, he asked why it couldn't be effective in the vintage market, arguing that it would take relatively little cash to raise the awareness of the brand by bidding up (and in some cases buying) the most desirable examples. Initially, the old guard was skeptical, but the rap music played during the presentation was so irritating that they quickly acquiesced, and threw him a budget of $500k just to cut the damn thing short.
Ah yes .... This has been bandied about on various blogs. New watch Brand has gone to hell due to bad management but the vintage heritage brand is still respected. Thus 16k for a tri at Christies , the evil Nina craze, and this gem. I wonder how many others are doing this? Still after seeing a flawless gold tri compax last October in Paris I fell head over heels without A clue about this brand. The watches are just cool!
to add - would this not include ressurected brands like Panerai -desperately trying to establish JLC/VC/PP/AP heritage?
