Hey guys, I've been slowly chipping away at a few parts, mainly for my 321s. I've got some service items (pushers, crystals, etc) and am now working on some movement parts. Some of them - like a balance complete - are hard to find and if found, very expensive. I know some of the experienced collectors have accumulated parts and movements. I'm wondering now if I should -continue the hunt for some of these rare and expensive parts that I may never need? -find a reasonably priced and proper vintage cal 321 for potential donor? -rely on omega and be prepared to pay? -all of the above? I could use some feedback as I muddle through how to be prepared enough without blowing my brains out. Greatly appreciated guys! J
On the plus side Omega is getting better now at dealing with vintage pieces as a few members have posted about really good results from Bienne with sympathetic restorations and if the parts requirements are significant it can actually be reasonably good value too.
I've seen some of those success stories. Pretty good turn outs I'd say. Don't recall one with an older speedy. I'll go search. So, sounds like best option is all of the above. Noted.. thanks!
This is a 105.003 done by Bienne, looks like they did a really nice job, included an extract and returned all parts as well: https://omegaforums.net/threads/omega-speedmaster-105-003-65-back-from-bienne.17322/
Heh, I even commented on that one. Thanks for the link! So they're getting more sympathetic to vintage/collectors. That's good.. but I guess what I'm concerned about is, for how long will they be able to do that? (ie, how long will supplies last? - I know, we don't know)
I would consider this a one off - informed buyer with a long relationship with the service center who knew exactly what he wanted and still had to thresh things out with discussions. Can this be replicated?
Omega has always done well with Speedmaster restorations, as they have many NOS parts for the 861 movement in inventory and will order new batches of case parts when needed. It's all the other not-so-plentiful models that they screw-up. gatorcpa
