Bought this watch recently. Was looking to find more info on it. Its a De Ville. I believe from the 70s. I don't believe the back casing is the original. Stainless steel.

I’m no expert on the De Villes, but your ref is from a watch that was released in 1987 with a cal 1430 quartz movement. The cal. 620 in your watch in from the 60s, though, if I’m not mistaken. So I’m afraid it’s certainly a Franken in some way, even if it’s just the case back - that being said, if it’s only that then there are definitely worse Frankens out there.

Another thought: I know it’s definitely not a 396.1012 since 9=electronic and 6=water resistant calendar and the watch you have is certainly neither of the two, but a part of me could sympathize with the idea of someone putting a genuine mechanic movement in a quartz watch. 😉

Ref appears stamped inside the caseback at the bottom, 396-1012, and here it is on the Omega website: https://www.omegawatches.com/watch-omega-de-ville-omega-dl-396-1012

What's unusual is that I can only find reference to the quartz movement for this model as shown in this link, tho it has a different caseback but marked with the same reference #.

I have seen the caseback that's on yours on steel and other steel and gold variations, so maybe (this is a guess) somebody put this one together after the quartz bit failed? Maybe somebody can tell you if this ever came with both movement types.

Here's info on that tiny movement as well: https://watchguy.co.uk/repair-service-omega-calibre-620/
The retaining ring coating matches the movement on your watch. I hope this gets you started, but we need someone more informed than I to clear this up.

Thanks for the reply. I dont know yet how I feel about the watch knowing that its not fully original. I did buy it because it was not a quartz so theirs a weird duality regarding the matter.

Well, that is not something you see every day. Interesting first post for sure.

396.1012 is an 80s quartz watch usually with a date so the dial and movement are wrong. Caseback and bracelet may match. I hope it was very cheap

Looks like someone had a left over 620 and dial from a gold melt victim, and found this and thought, "Hey! That'll fit!".

Not a bad transformation actually, but still a franken if not disclosed to the buyer.

Thank you everyone for your help and reply. I'm going to return the watch. The seller has already communicated with me that he'll be fine with the return. I loved the Omega, however, I would like to find one that is similar to this but not be compromised of Frankenstein omega parts.

Then I guess you are looking for a two-tone 1980s quartz DeVille. These are not particularly collectible, so it should be an inexpensive purchase if you find one.

I wouldn't mind a quartz if the price was right. But I rather have a mechanical watch. I'm looking at others auctioning on ebay. The quartz watches seem plentiful and they go for a decent price. The mechanical watches there appear either requiring a ton of TLC to be functional or too expensive for a vintage watch. I would really like a vintage mechanical seamaster.

Yes as that copper colored spacer ring probably took quite a bit of careful shaping to do the job. Definitely not a hack job.

You can still find these for not too much money with some patience. Omega tends to be largely undervalued even still, until you step into colorful dials, chronos, and sports watches. If you prefer mechanical, I say hold out since it will give you more pleasure considering this will live on your body. Most of us can attest to buying a "good enough" watch only to move it on later for the one we knew we actually wanted.

If you like the style and prefer mechanical this watch is perfect for you as long as the price is right. I’ve got a early 80s gold 1342 sitting around if you want it for Cheap.

I think we need to get some calibration regarding the OP's budget. What is "not too much" for one person may be "too expensive" for another. It's all relative.

What's cheap? Wanna have a contest to see who can sell this guy the cheapest all-original mechanical and good running Omega? 😁
