Hi Guys. I’d really love some feedback on my first speedy

Hi all. This is a virgin post for me, so please forgive my ramblings

I’m finally ready to pull the trigger on a vintage speedy. I’ve been a massive fan for years and am finally ready to take the plunge, but now am scared to death about buying something which isn’t great for the money I want to spend. I was hoping for something from the 70’s/80’s but I think they’re maybe a bit out of my price range now by the looks of things..I really wanted something as original as possible (with a bit of creamy patina). There doesn’t seem to be a whole lot on chrono 24 that I could see. Ive found a couple on eBay, but am a little dubious.

Would massively appreciate any feedback you could give on this one - if it looks look legit and also if it’s OK to buy without the original bracelet.
Described as follows:

Omega Speedmaster Professional ST045.022 Cal 861 Circa 1993.

Hi All we have a very nice Speedmaster ,almost 30 years old ,a lovely creamy patina on hour markers , serviced about 8 years ago , no receipt, no box,no papers , comes with aged Italian leather Hodinkee strap . Keeps good time +/- 1min per day
Many thanks

Ahh very sorry. My bad ‍♂️. Asking price is AUD $5500 (or around USD $4000). I’m based in Australia, as is the watch - so wouldn’t need to pay taxes!

I'm more into older Speedmasters (others will know better) so just two remarks:

One minute per day +/- isn't a good timekeeping IMO so a service seems to be necessary

I have some doubts about the case, this lug end doesn't look as it should

Does it have the movement cover as well?

I'm NOT an expert but tbh at that sort of money I'd be wanting the bracelet included.

Hi there. Thanks for reply. That’s a good point as I didn’t see the dust cover in the pics. I’ll check with the seller. Alas, no bracelet 🙁
Thanks again!

The mark on the lug could be from wearing it on a bracelet. Ask for a closeup of both lugs. No recent service (A$ 450+) and no metal band: 4800-5000 max. Good luck !

@Casablanca78 I'm note sure if a late 70s reference is out of your price range,if you're willing to spend $4k on this 90s example?

It’s a 90’s reference by the dial. Early to mid 90’s I believe.

seems high to me esp with that lug. You should be able to find a mid to late 90’s for 3,500usd.

48280000 serial is correct for @1991.

Looks like $3,000 USD would be negotiating start point with all great info provided by the OF experts

I would move on. That case looks in need of work. The lug damage would bother me. I found a 1997 with lovely creamy tritium dial for less and that’s here in the uk.

Ah the joys of trying to buy a good vintage Speedmaster in Oz. Prices, particularly for late Tritium dial pieces are not in touch with the world market IMHO, I personally would move on from the above at that price and condition for head only.
Did pick up a mid 90s 3950 about four years back off Gumtree for $AU3k, no bracelet, no history, then, no crown, it fell out when the watch arrived🙁. Serviced and sold as was just not that happy with the case, dial was nice but...
My new daily Speedie, 1991 145.022, came out of Japan on a 1479 Bracelet for a lot less than the asking price above, including taxes. Just had it serviced by Adam Lewis, suspects it had never been serviced before and had little use in the past, minimal wear on the movement. That is probably going to change. Photo below.

Thanks for the message. Looks like you’ve got a beauty there!! yeah, Australian prices do seem a little detached from the rest of the world. I’ve seen a few out of Japan (elady etc.) which look OK and seem to offer fair value. Maybe I’ll consider it a bit more seriously from Japan then…
If you guys don’t mind, maybe I’ll post again for some of your much valued feedback if I see something which looks worthwhile 😀

With customs fees it ends up more like 15% into Australia. Under $1AUK often does not attract charges although customs changed the rules to include items under this a while back. Have not bought from elady but I have bought 3 watches off other traders in Japan. The Omega, a Zenith Rainbow Flyback and LE JDM Seiko. All excellent, sensibly priced and efficient transactions. One dealer did alter value without being asked, which was a pleasant surprise but best to factor in 15% on price and postage.
Cheers.
