Hi All, About five years ago I inherited my dad's Speedmaster 105.003-65 that he bought new in Hong Kong in 1966 (as a 2nd Lt in the Air Force). I also have a Rolex Submariner (two tone that I bought new 12 years ago). I love the Omega, but I hadn't done any real research on it until just recently, and I was amazed to see the current values. Anyway, I'm looking forward to learning what I can about his beautiful watch from some real Omega enthusiasts. Cheers!
Welcome aboard! What starts as a passing interest can become an all-consuming obsession. And it's awesome!! Start with these: http://www.moonwatchonly.com https://www.fratellowatches.com http://speedmaster101.com And of course the Omega Forum is an invaluable source of information. Just dig in!
Wonderful 105.003. That is a family heirloom piece for sure. I hope the original hands were made available after the service. Those should be kept together.
Thanks for the kinds words, advice, and links. The watch band was broken and the watch had been sitting in a drawer for several years when I had it serviced in 1989 (by a watchmaker in Seattle) for my dad's birthday. The hands were replaced at that time too. The watch was serviced again in 2015, but no parts were replaced at that time. The case is in nearly perfect condition without any scratches or signs of opening on the back; the lines are all sharp and crisp without signs of excessive polishing. I wish I had know then what I've learned over the last couple of days as I would have kept hold of the those hands and the broken band. Does it make financial sense to try find some vintage hands (they can be quite expensive) or a vintage band?
Welcome 1965Speedie. My 1965 Speedie (a 105.012) has similar lume plots to yours so those look original.
I was nearly certain that the dial was original (and unmolested), but it's nice to have a confirming opinion. Thanks!
Dial appears original. That dial would not be available in 95. I’d not chase hands unless your planning to sell it. Or you want it to be original. It could be a long term hunt for good ones at the right price.
Agree to not chasing a hand set. If you had the original parts it would be a plus to put back together. But as mentioned, there is no point unless you are looking to sell. Again, great piece!
