Hi all, just trying to learn as much as I can about this vintage seamaster. If you can share anything I’d appreciate it!

 

Why the title said speedmaster

 

Could you give a little background? Is this your watch? If so, where did you get it? Are you considering a purchase? If so, from whom? Looking to sell?

 

I suspect the case, movement, dial, hands, crown and crystal of that Speedmaster have been replaced with Seamaster parts. Plus the pushers and bezel are gone. That will really hurt the value.

 

Just goes to show how much non watch people notice about watches.
Just about nothing.

 

Sorry, i made an error, I meant seamaster in the title. This was my grandfathers watch, I’ve had it sitting in a drawer forever. I just know nothing about it (year/details/value). He was an amazing guy, helped build the road to Russia, held lots of construction patents, and was generally super successful in most of what he attempted. I highly DOUBT any of those changes blacktalon is talking about were made, just not something he would have done or had done. He was a buy it new, keep it new kinda guy. I would suspect it more likely that everything in it is original. It actually runs amazingly well still too, anytime I pick it up to look at it it starts running. Someone else had hinted at it being from the 50’s on another forum. But I figure this forum probably knows more.

 

Might be a 2849 with a 500 series automatic calibre inside - late fifties?

@BlackTalon was joking because of the Speedmaster/Seamaster confusion.

Looks original based on the photos but very hard to say with those images.

Does it hurt value to get a new crystal installed?

 

I think that’s part of what I’m trying to figure out. I’m pretty sure it’s 100% original so I don’t want to do anything to it that’s dumb (like a redial or something). But I might like to get some of the crystal issues resolved and maybe service the movement?

 

There is nothing wrong with getting a new crystal installed. I would recommend it.

Do that, get it serviced and you'll be good to go.

It would look lovely on a leather strap imo but that's my personal taste.

Congratulations - wear it in good health as a reminder of your grandfather.

 

This other watch has been redialed and your dial is how it should look like.

I'd recommend to remove this "bracelet", because it usually does harm to the lugs. I'd wear the watch on a nice leather strap instead.
