Help with watch purchase

Since inheriting some bits from my grandad I’ve become obsessed with antiques - I’d love to own a vintage watch and I’ve landed on omega.

I’m struggling to find info on the watch below I’m currently looking to buy on eBay.

I’ve been told it’s the 550 movement and 14k gold filled - dating the watch between 1958 -1969. There’s no info on the sale post as to the model but I think it’s 168.022.

The strap is a tacky non genuine stretch strap but I’m only interested in the watch itself.

Things that are putting me off is the case back - should this also be 14k filled?
I cannot see the ‘Swiss’ at the bottom but I’m not sure if this is due to age.

The price is also quite low from the research I’ve done - £380.

Some help would be amazing on thoughts to authenticity, value ect.

I’m also looking at another one which is advertised as a 166.0202, the price on this is £450 which is about the market price.

Thanks in advance!

It's not a 168.022 since the dial is not marked chronometer, but I don't even want to take the time to pick this watch apart, I don't recommend it.

TBH, you sound like someone who might be interested in starting with a nice Omega, so I would steer you away from gold-filled watches entirely. Bottom-fishing for the cheapest possible example isn't usually the best approach for a beginner. Hunt for something nice and honest, in a sold stainless or gold case. Or if you insist on a golden case and your budget doesn't allow a solid gold case (even 9K), you can consider gold-capped, as long as it is in good condition.

Hi Dan,

Really appreciate the response! You need say no more on the watch above - I’ll steer clear and take the advice.

As I’ve said above I am also looking at a 166.0202 - if you could have a quick glance and also let me know any info I should be aware of I’d be hugely grateful!

I’ll attach pictures.

The asking is £450.

Thanks!

I support Dan, as above. Take your time, check prices at C24 e.g. and ask here before pulling the trigger!

Thanks fallout, really appreciate the help!

Could you take a look at the one posted above in the comment section? As I’d be looking to go for it.

Thanks so much.

Not worth the price on the second one. The reference is not particularly collectible. And the watch isn't in that great shape... This appears to be a gold plated variety with the plating having worn through in spots (check the lugs in the 2nd photo).

Thanks stormsky- I’ll keep an eye out, I did check the post on this forum with the pointers on finding a good one so I’ll put that to use.
I think I’ll steer away from the gold plating/filled and go for a stainless like Dan suggested.

Appreciate the help on here.
