    Hey guys,

I need your help to investigate an interesting Speedmaster I just saw. It's a typical straight writing (with a wrong second hand :D ) but interesting case back.
Have you ever seen "ZAF" on the back of a Speedmaster, and what could it stand for? Options are Zambia Air Force or more likely (the owner is from the Netherlands) Zuid Africa. If second, what does it mean? Is it an official watch to a governmental unit or something?

Would love to hear your opinions.

    Nico

Could be initials of the owner? The engraving is quite crude.

    Get the Extract.
Its highly unlikely to be anything other than the owners initials.

Looks too rough to be anything official. Then again, the actual engraving might be quite neat - is it subsequent damage that makes it appear rough?

    What does the owner say?

The 227/73 is quite intriguing. Definitely worth getting an extract.

ZAF normally stands for Zambian Airforce. but your 227/73 does not make much sense. now they have 100 aircraft. a few russian MIG`s. in 1973 who knows? extract would be interesting, yes. kind regards. achim

looks like some damage on the engraving...it actually looks very official and pretty well executed.

    Extract...

It's Photobucket and their crappy third-party hosting rules that have screwed up the photo link. There is a work around but I never tried it. The best I could do was grab a screenshot of the thumbnail from the user's gallery in Photobucket. Resolution is obviously low, but enough to get an idea...

Interesting. I try to push him to an extract but I have the feeling he doesn't want to :(

Seems the ZAF was established in 1968 and this Speedy could be serial number 227 in the year 1973. Could be a bit late for a -69, but its the best guess we have without a extract.

Thanks guys! Its awesome to solve a puzzle like that :)

Well I think I now have pivoted and think this might indeed be something special.

You can always order an extract yourself - you do not have to own the watch, it’s only 120 chf.

Does the owner want to sell the watch? Or are you just solving the puzzle for him ;)?

I just want to help him and I am interested myself in the facts. He doesn't want to sell.....and is afraid to open it. Thats a bummer :(

But tbh, I wouldn't pay 120$ for an exctract wich is not for my watch :D

@w154 : You can do if you want, I am not member there. Thanks!
