Hello to all from a newbie here!
I need some help with a Omega Seamaster 284 I'm considering to purchase. I was told the watch originally comes from France and it has the 18K "eagle's head" French hallmarks (Poinçon or « Tête d'Aigle ») on it. It's rose gold, however by entering the 284 number into the Omega watches vintage database, there isn't a rose gold version. Please help me - could this be the OT 2895, Collection Trésor from 1956? I'm pretty sure the watch is authentic, but i would like to hear your expert opinion and also do you think the price requested from the seller - USD 4200 is fair for this watch? And please excuse my ignorance as a total newcomer :)

It's a beautiful watch which was infinitely more beautiful before someone went full 'tardo with a polishing wheel and creme. If that watchmaker was able to shave that much gold off of 5 to 10 watches a week...he probably had a nice 401k (k standing for karat) at the end of his career.

im not sure what this winder is worth but it's worth a lot less than $4200.

Sorry I couldn't be more helpful...

Rich is correct, this is way overpriced. Avoid, IMHO.

I think the seller needs to adjust his price downwards by one decimal place!

    Nowhere near a 4k, 3k, 2k or even 1k watch

1-1.5k at the bay should be more then enough...? It is 18k, but would this case consider a original case...?

Many thanks for your kind replies. In fact, even being totally ignorant I had the suspicion that price is way too exaggerated. Something about 1000-1500 maybe fair. But Wongo has the point - the biggest concern is could this case consider a original one?

The case is correct for an Omega cased in France, as many were. But this does to some extent reduce its value on the collector's market. Even for $1,000 - 1,500 you can find something much nicer than this.

Totally agree here, this isn't anywhere near a $1500 Omega.
Just curious, is it a dealer or a private seller asking the $4.2k?

French case usually fetch lower price compare to swiss siblings. Beside overpolished case, the dial is in bad shape..... certainly not worth even half the asking price

The suspected criminal polisher left the whole crime scene intact with all those finger prints on the dial! Should be easy for the French police to track him down...:D

Oh my god! Isn't that chief inspector clouzot!
    Peter Sellers at his best!
As for the watch, pretty clean movement but that's it. I agree that for less than 1k you can find a nicer watch.

I'm afraid the seller himself wasn't very aware of the real value of this watch. Like me, he too is not an expert in this field and it seems when originally purchased the watch in Paris, he was misled the fact that it comes with the 18k rose gold with French hallmarks largely increases its value on the collectors market, instead of reducing it as you kindly made clear. So I just sent him the link to this thread, suggesting him to list the watch online at a much lower price :)
